Athearn has announced an additional release of their EMD GP15-1 decorated for Frisco.

In their announcement dated 5/29/2020, the units will have new numbers SLSF 103, 107 and 114. These are detailed for their Genesis Line. They will be available without and with Tsunami2 decoders. Manufacturers suggested price is $209.98 and $299.98 respectively.

Orders are due by 6/26/2020. Estimated delivery date is May 2021. Recommend you contact your favorite dealer soon to place your order.

The prior (first) run of this model was announced 5/2010. At that time the unit numbers were SLSF 100, 118 and 123.

The Frisco was an early purchaser of the General Motors (GM) Electro-Motive Division (EMD) GP15-1. It rostered 25 units of this model numbered SLSF 100-124. They saw service system wide in single, multiple and mixed with other model unit configurations.

The prototype units featured as 12-cylinder EMD 645E engine that generated 1,500 hp (1,119 kW). They had a wheelbase of 29’ 9”. The length over the coupler pulling faces was 54’ 11”. They were used in road switcher and yard engine service, largely on secondary and branch lines.

Athearn continues to provide us with a steady stream of Frisco products. They have been good to work with and open to our suggestions / recommendations. It is important for us to support their efforts so they see us as a viable market for additional new products.

    Hope this helps.

Is Athearn going to release the model for N scale?

Excellent. Big thanks to Athearn for keeping us fed with new models. The first run of units can be hard to come by, so I think this is a welcome run.

I doubt it. Athearn doesn't seem to do much for N scale models. Atlas has a model of the GP15-1 in their trainman line that has been made in frisco colors before though.

They will include the nose-mounted Pyle Gyralight, roof-mounted Prime Stratolite and LEDs for all lighting.

  7. I know at least one of these had:QA&P in white letters under the cab. Do any of you happen to know what road number that was?

    thanks!

I can't remember off the top of my head which one was the QA&P unit. I know it appears toward the end of the Ship it on the Frisco film if someone has a copy of that handy, I didn't have time to check mine tonight.

These pictures of from 1980 don't show a QA&P stencil below the cab of 107.

Found a few minutes to look at Ship it on the Frisco. Indeed it was 107 that had the QA&P stencil below the cab. The only problem is I can't find a still picture that shows the QA&P lettering. I can only find it in the video. Anyone else know of a photo that shows the QA&P lettering on 107?
Also, do we want to ask Athearn if they are interested in adding the lettering to their model?

Top of page 186 in Hofsommers "The Quanah Route" shows the QA&P on the equipment doors under the cab. The QAP crew added the lettering, not the Frisco or BN. From what I can tell they were applied to both sides. Just those white plastic or vinyl letters bought at a hardware store. It looks to me.

  13. That is where I had seen it Tom. I think I’ll take a look. That was the last trains pictures wasn’t it? Maybe they only had it then?

The temporary "QA&P" lettering was applied for the video taping of the last run over the railroad. The lettering was very short term - it lasted one day only. It was applied by and for the crew making the video. The locomotive was never officially lettered for, relettered, or authorized by the Frisco, the real QA&P or that successor railroad.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!

Interesting. Learn something new every day.

  16. Anyone looking for the early run GP-15s should keep an eye on eBay. I’ve been patient, and found all three of mine on there. Nice models! Thanks Athearn!

Athearn now shows the GP15-1s in-stock. Theres one store on Ebay that has each number listed (for full MSRP) so the usual online stores should have them soon. Hopefully these turn out better than the FP7 offering.

Out of curiosity, what was wrong with the FP7?

Well it's now strike 2 for Athearn. I can't believe a company that has a history of getting the little things right are now making huge mistakes on their top dollar models. The lack of quality control is unacceptable for what they charge on these models.

Biggest issue off the bat, they completely messed up the placement of the bottom paint line. It's too high. It goes part way up on to the cab, which is no where near correct. THEY KNOW THIS. THEY'VE MADE THIS CORRECTLY SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE.

Next issue, they forgot to paint the horn before installation. It's black. I can't find a single picture where the horn is anything other than red. They took the time to paint the Gyralight and headlight silver, but couldn't be bothered to paint the horn.

I'm sure there are other flaws, but I haven't found them yet. Pictures attached that compare a new unit, 103, with a unit from the previous run, 123.
