Since starting this battle with stage 4A bladder cancer 2+ years ago, I've not done a lot of modeling. In addition to fatigue from the treatments, the death of the dream layout has been a bummer. Running weekly sessions on the big HO layout (one of nine layouts in all the scales) of the Knoxville club in Oak Ridge has kept me going. One of the members gave me a challenge a month ago to finish a 70-year-old Ambroid craftsman kit for a PRR X23 single sheathed box/reefer car that someone had started, given up, and donated to the club. Lately, I've kept the small digital camera next to the work bench since it's so easy to photo document each modeling step. Tix box car doors and an excellent decal set by Al Westerfield were included, so I built it as a box car. In all my modeling years, I'd never built an Ambroit kit before. It brought back memories of those old Silver Streak kits.

More photos. Those Ambroid car weights were a great idea. The Kadee box just fit.

That Westerfield decal set was superb. He lives here in East Tennessee and is a NMRA MMR. Post decaling and flat overspray, I applied a light over spray of brown and got close to BCR. We need a Krylon gloss Box Car Red rattle can.

Go to O'Reilly Auto Parts and get a rattle can of Duplicolor Red Oxide primer. Flows out beautifully, perfect match for Frisco cabooses and cars. Not sure what the PRR color would be. I have a Westerfield built and lost the instructions so don't know what to paint it. It is the reefer version.

Doug - I remember building only one Ambroid kit, also one of the "One of Five Thousand" series.. I think it was the Frisco side braced box car with the big FRISCO letters if I recall correctly. Turned out great, looked very nice. I remember building it in my basement "shop" while listening to the Cardinal-Royals 1985 World Series. The car turned out great, the Series did not!

  11. Another project. These were super cheap from Trainworld so I had to do it. I like modern power and fantasy paint so here ya go. The green on the nose to pay homage to the F units of the past. Some QA & P decals for fun. Remember Tom, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!! Of course, you already know I love your modern QA&P stuff! Its not quite done. Some touch ups and weathering to go, But its close. I have been faking corona symptoms at work trying to get sent home for a month to model. HA

    Steve:

Love the little rat rod van. Rat rods aren't my thing, but your "old" rust effects are superb on that old bucket.

Like your paint scheme on the modern engine (whatever it is!), too.

  15. Thanks Andre. I’m not into the over the top junky rat rods. But I like deliveries like this.

the diesel is a GE es44

    thanks again, Steve

Finally got a little weathering done to my latest QA&P locomotive. This makes 4 tunnel units the Q has acquired. The recently acquired SD45-2 (ex-Conrail) has suffered a prime mover failure and will be up for disposition. The axle generator is a brown/red-ish color. For those of you that have worked on older vehicles, you remember those heater core hoses? We used to cover some of those axle generator cables with that hose. This aint no techno-toaster, just good old EMD raw power.

    Frisco Friends,

Two weeks of nothing but Frisco excellence from this upstanding group since my last post! Love that QA&P beast and Steve that REA van is a winner. Hope there is a St. Louis RPM this year to show off your stuff! Many, many thanks to Karl for all of the fine research on the Weir Branch / P&C history and maps.

Well, I returned from West Point to find myself in a two week self-quarantine at the direction of my higher-ups. Rule was applied to anyone travelling, even in the US. As a result, I have had to turn my workbench into a desk for telework (hey, at least it was cleaned off for once), and had to stow the layout because of the tidal wave of green pollen and leaves from the live oaks in Texas (needed the garage for the car and truck more than the trains).

Over the weekend, I did get a few minor bits of progress in. Finished up the wiring and testing of switch machines for the new Lightning Creek Mine sections. Working like a charm. I think I am actually getting the hang of building those FastTracks Turnouts. I then spun up the airbrush and painted the new areas of track on the mine area and the brickyard:

    Painting-Track-1sm.JPG

    Painting-Track-2sm.JPG

You can see that the copper ties needed a second coat, which was a follow-up after these pictures. Now for some track weathering and landscaping/scenery! One of the bonuses of a sectional layout is that I can take out just one of these ~4ft sections and work on it for a bit, even with little space.

Everyone take care, hole up, and work on those trains!

    -Bob T.
