The vertical placement of the FRISCO lettering on the sides looks low to me. That sort of thing would bug me every time I looked at it.

Actually, looking at the pictures of GP7s in the B/Y scheme, the placement looks correct. The placement on O/W units is higher.

The lettering font on the O/W units are larger! And are the same size as the 2nd generation motive power eg: U25B, U30B, etc. Painted in O/W!

Speaking of second generation locomotives is there more than one U30B XR locomotives? The only one I can find is #846. I also have a HO scale model of it, the only Frisco locomotive in my HO collection. Bought it from Ken about a year ago. Again, Thank you Ken.

Wow... Keith's pictures sure brought back some great memories. Loved those old black n' yellow striped Geeps.

Agree with the others that Athearn's paint samples look EXCELLENT. I'll bet they address the stacks.

    FWIW:

There was also a variant of the black n' yellow font for "FRISCO" on the hood sides as well as placement (slightly higher). Several units received such. I went through some of my old (and fading now!) pictures and here's just a couple of examples I just scanned...

    35mm Kodacolor:

    SLSF_548_FS_060176.jpg

Kodak "Instamatic" (best I could do at the time!)...

    SLSF_588_FS_122574.jpg
As you can see, the font isn't as "stretched" ("extended") as the original font and the name is placed higher. Engines displaying such in my small stack of roster photos are: 518, 516, 536.

I'm sure there were more GP7's that received that particular phase of paint scheme ("V stripe"), but that's all I noticed in my small stack of roster-type photos.

    All fer now.

"Beaver pelt"... Lol... I see what you did there...

  7. Joe GE had two XR paint schemes. The Frisco 846 got one and the L&N got the other.

    Andre,
    I agree!
If and when they arrive in our possession, and the stacks are tall as mentioned and shown, I most definitely will cut them down to the appropriate height and or replace them if applicable with the turbo charged version.
I might even give it a bath of mother natures version of soap! ( weathering).

SLSF tried several different styles of spark arrestors.

I ordered a set of the three Genesis GP7's. Even though I have no layout, and usually am selling. locomotives, I just had to have a set of these!

I wish Genesis would do a set of b/y F7's.

    Agree. See my above post.

However, in all my photographic wanderings over the decades that span the beginnings of Frisco's dieseldom up to their last moments as an entity... I have yet to see any photographic evidence of the above exhaust stacks. IF the Frisco did indeed experiment with the above "Stovepipe" exhaust add-ons, and IF indeed a photo exists, then Athearn must have managed to find the one and only pic that must exist of same! (And if so, then surely it must be Russian dabbling.)

    :ROFLMAO:

I still bet Athearn gets it sorted before production.

  12. When my dad talked to Athearn in St Louis they claimed to have a “freight scheme” set of Fs in the works. We shall see.

Ken can I be first to get my dibs in on those when you are done looking at them? :)

Yeah...they're doing the same F3 numbers they already did. Not sure on F7s.

I've been trying to put the bug in their ear on black/yellow FP7s...we shall see.

True that, I will install it with the appropriate type that the numbered loco is shown in Frisco books and photos!

Yep, yep, they did, and some looked like washing machines atop those hoods. I went thru the Archives tonight trying to look at top views (roofer madness) of some of our Geep 7's.

An AMTK image, but a Geep 7 loco doing it's job many years after.

The box type not so tall and a bit larger in diameter, than the ATH/Genesis images.

A round type arrestor. Maybe some damage to the long hood end, the fresh paint and no number board numbers.

    always like top views.

    yet another spark arrestor image.

Another thing, again just my wish. I wish they would trim the side skirts to show some of the later Geeps.
It added even more character to these classic old Geeps.
Looking at these images, I see that some had sander hoses on each end, of each truck, which was not all that common back in the day. These were needed as they could be a bit slippery.
Ran a chop nose version, it had all the heart for the job, but not enough traction. On some locos you needed to go to the 2nd or 3rd notch to get them to move. These Geep's would make enough amperage to go to work at 1 throttle, making them great switching locos as well.
I sit here typing this and think of riding on a GP7, sitting on my grandpas lap, switching the yard in Quanah. I remember pulling on that whistle rope for the Oil Mill crossing on the west end. It was a life changing thing for me, even as a 8 or 9 year old, I still remember the smells and the guys saying, "lets get him marked up"
I have such a special connection with these old Geep engines, very special.

Picked mine up this evening. I got the boiler-equipped unit (#612). It is very nice. I paid $225 all in.

May I ask what hobby shop did you get this from?

Ask away! We have a guy here who operates a hobby shop out of his daughter's florist shop in Scott City (MO). He gives us pretty good deals. In the case of this locomotive, the price was $200 plus tax, which ended up being about 50% off list.

BTW, I ran the locomotive this morning, and it looks and runs just fine. In fact the hardest thing about it is getting it out of the package.
