Today the 185 went into the lacquer thinner bath to clean up solder flux. A few spots need some microblasting prior to painting. Stay tuned. The 3802 is slated to go in next.
I just got another 1306 class today which will be remotored, correct doghouse installed and put on the market.

Great work Don. I would like to put first dibs on the 1306 class 2-8-0 if you are going to put it out for sale.

ADA585C3-DB94-4A22-B308-E4C38EED3B51.jpeg I started this last Wednesday if that counts. It’s an N scale laser cut wood kit. I naturally had to modify it a bit.

OK. I'll let you know when it is painted, etc. Are you going to put sound in it?

If at all possible. Thanks Don.

It would be a real challenge. With the 184 I had, I put a DCC decoder in the boiler, but non sound.
She has been blasted and a coat of primer and red cab roof. Day or so of primer curing, will get the finish color, then mask and graphite. Paint cab interior green and letter. I don't know if I have any more Champ decals, but have the set in Dulux Gold, which is what they were after the late 30s.

DCC only, then if that is what is feasible. Thanks Don!

Do you want me to install DCC or are you still interested?

Yes, definitely still interested. I would love for it to include DCC.

One hour to Wednesday, but what the heck. This past week, I decided to try and build out most of my kit stockpile that includes about a half-dozen freight cars and the same number of structures. There are also a few Jordon Highway miniatures on the shelf. Many of these are prime candidates to work on while traveling, as they require minimal tools and space. Several work trips in the near future, so timely decision overall.

The past few days included the decaling of a 36ft boxcar with a Frisco billboard herald. While not quite prototypical, it should blend in with the crowd.

I also finished assembling the first of three Tichy flat cars. These seem to be nice models, with a number of detail parts.

The brake detail is nice, and gave some insight if I want to use a similar brake detail kit on other cars like the Accurail ones.

Yes, a bit sloppy with the glue, but a little paint and will be fine. Tichy now offers a decal set with a number of road names. Not sure if Frisco is among them.

    Take care all,

    -Bob T.

Nice car, Bob! You done good.

For the past several days I've been dabbling in my stockpile of engine projects. I tackled an Atlas/Kato RS-11 that really runs good. I decided I was going to do what I typically do, and shave off the cast-on grab irons so I could replace with actual wire grabs.

    What was I thinking???

Did you know there is a total of twenty-seven grab irons on an Atlas/Kato RS-11?

Me neither. Never counted before. However, now I am on very intimate terms with just how many, and how much effort, it takes to remove/replace them.

I futzed and fiddled with that sucker for a couple/three days.

    However, FINALLY, I prevailed:

There's more pics of this and other projects along with some additional drivel... I mean intelligent and thought-provoking musings... in my layout thread here:

    All fer now!

Well I gotta surprise in the US Mail yesterday. My very own SL-SF drop deck 6 axle flat car. I opted for the "smoothest plastic print", for the trucks and car and the transformer load. You gotta look pretty close to see the print lines on this. I am very pleased with it so far. It was a bit bent when it arrived but I got out the bar clamps, with a .020 shim under each end to provide a negative camber, clamped it up, sat it out in the sunlight all day and walla fixed it. I was advised to set it in the sun anyway so the suns UV rays would harden any uncured almost translucent plastic. It then went into the Bestine "N-Heptane" overnight and after a scrubbing this morning with a stiff tooth brush it came out very good and pretty much as you see it here. I aint gonna lie, there is some drilling and tapping and basic clean up to assemble the trucks. I was so impressed that upon assembly, I sat the car on the tracks, and with the NWSL 30" wheels it was exactly matched with the old KD coupler gauge. The transformer measures 15' high it is gonna be about the same as an auto rack in height. This is with out any added details like grabs train line pipe and stem winder brake staffs.
    I like it so far.

Wow! That is so cool. 3D printing has really broadened the horizons for model railroading. In my case it’s railroad modeling.
I can’t wait to see how you detail and weather it. Please start a thread on painting and weathering a 3D printed piece of rolling stock. Being a Jedi Master and all :)

    Thanks Jim!
3D printing continues to evolve and in a few years it will go places we cannot conceive of today. I am no expert at all with this. If it weren't for a young fellow still in school this may not have happened at all. He did such a great job on it, and deserves the credit. I just made some suggestions LOL. I cant believe how accurate he was with the coupler height. When he was designing it, he said it would be within an inch, and it sure was. I still think there needs to be a couple mods to the car and trucks, and will submit the same soon. Holes for the grab irons are even there.
I will start another thread soon.
    Thanks again Jim!

  15. Tom, that is pretty exciting news. I am glad it all came together.
I have not bought a whole lot of printed parts (usually due to texture issues) but I have bought loads of resin stuff and cast my own over the years and resin always has some bends too.
The texture of the print looks good in the pictures at least. With that transformer it should be plenty heavy or easy to hide weight. Can you post a link or can I get to the corrected car from the old link? Thanks

  16. Like usual for me not Wednesday, but some ongoing project pics for a couple guys I paint for.

  17. Some of you have heard me profess my U boat love. Mainly Hi-hood U25bs. (because I was not an engineer)HA I had one oriental model my dad bought new when they came out. I have been on the hunt for another for a long time. The very few I have seen have fallen through for some reason or another. Finally I happened on to one on eBay that was not too expensive. PLUS he had not listed it as a hi nosed unit. I bought it. In the message I said if he ever had another to let me know. He did with 3 more. So I spent the next few years hobby budget all at once and scored 4 total. Making 5 total in my collection. I was way more excited than my wife. HAHAHA
Anyway I have to strip all of them but I got the first one blasted and started decals. At least a couple will be orange and white. I'm gradually getting closer to my dream of a model of all 32.
