Black locomotives have been operating on the Rolla local for the BNSF for the past week or so. Their stripes are white, not yellow, alas because they are FURX ex-NS GP-38-2 types. Here are 3 pictures. Two were taken by my wife on October 8 and 9, 2018 and I took the other October 16, 2018. One could try to imagine the short hoods are high and the stripes are diagonal and yellow (and that 543 is in its original "ATSF warbonnet" scheme).

Where is the Rolla local based out of now? What are it's limits? When I was there in the 90s it was a turn out of Cuba.

As I understand it, the local runs from Lindenwood to Rolla to deliver loads along the route as well as at Rolla. The locomotives do not seem to turn. It looks like they just run around the train and reverse direction to head back to Lindenwood. Hopefully, the latest crop of rented power will do as well as the others in this service.

Flooding on the Mississippi has closed the BNSF K-Line through Hannibal to Keokuk and the River Line to Cape Girardeau .so trains are diverting to the Cuba (Rolla-Lebanon) Sub. There has been quite a variety in the last few days. Unit petroleum trains with CP power occur from time to time. A coal train just went west around 7:50 PM Tuesday (3/26/2019) with six locomotives on the point and two DP pushing. Around Noon Tuesday a westbound unit ethanol train passed through with two lead locomotives and one pushing. The photo shows one of the cars on that train.

You may like to send him reports about what has been operating along the BnSF.
He would do the same if he knew you.

A westbound train of side dump cars came through early this afternoon. It has been a long time since I have seen such large rocks pass by on the railroad. I wonder where it was headed. The photos show it was "push-pull" with one locomotive on each end.

With that type of train that I've run, the rip-rap was typically used to shore up embankments that are "slipping" account of heavy rains/etc, as well as fill creek erosion's after flooding.

I happened to drive Old St. James Road between Rolla and St. James this evening; the road parallels the tracks for most of the way, especially along the Dillon siding. They have been working at tie replacement in the area for a while, but today I tripped over a new development. A switch has been cut into the siding about a third of the way east from the west switch. It's trailing points eastbound. Looks like a panel switch was put in place after a quick buildup of the grade for it. The spur is only a few hundred feet long; looks like MoW cars parked on it.
There's also a nice, new concrete double grade crossing about half way along the siding and a general rehab of the area. A long cut of well cars is tied up on the siding (split in the middle for the grade crossing).

It is not exactly "Cavalcade," but BNSF rates some credit for acknowledging the year on the current power for its Cuba Sub Local ("Rolla Rocket").

I saw the local eastbound in St. James around 9:00 last Friday morning. I believe I've also seen it eastbound on Wednesday mornings. Does it tie down in Rolla on Tuesdays and Thursdays? Thanks.

I believe your impression is correct because I have heard the local goes opposite directions on alternate days. Watching the power move by certainly gives the impression the local goes west one day and returns the next, alternating its direction. There are some afternoons, however, when the train appears headed west for an overnight, but the power returns later in the evening pulling a different consist.

Sounds like the time when the the BNSF refurbished the Thayer line Springfield to Memphis.

Thanks Bill. I've been doing well. Like I told Tom Holley, I enjoy being back in Wesco and close to the Meramec. My son goes fishing practically everyday at the dam. Sometimes his grandpa, age 84, goes with him. Lots of bluegill, bass, and goggle-eye here.
