Ruh-ro boys, Joes getting the bug.......
I went down to my LHS tonight and bought some round stock, some rectangle stock, then went to Hobby Lobby to find some brass wire. The rebuild will commence soon!

Ken, I find it hard to believe you would take all that time to sketch out the piping and get the placement of the stack in the wrong spot. I'm willing to bet a bbq dinner it is as you show. I plan to leave the location of the front piping as it stands but redo the tanks and correct the rear piping. As you pointed out, it could have changed during the time the unit was built or after it got in service. Perhaps there was some kind of damage to the unit or a modification.

ETA: I meant to say, in this particular locomotive, it was as you drew it out. I believe it was changed at some point after the unit got into service most likely. Both you and Tom have provided invaluable help in the form of pictures and advice on this, I hope my model of it can do it justice.......

    Thanks again!

I just checked back in my Diesel Era collection (I have every issue). In the May/June year 2000 issue, Vol 11, No 3, they had a nice article on Frisco's GP35's. Included was a Diesel Era drawing of a torpedo boat GP35, front, rear, both sides and top. It does show the connecting pipe line between the two tanks running close ahead of the front end of the tanks and just ahead of the front of the diesel exhaust. The front of the tanks and the front of the exhaust housing are close to being lined up. This is the opposite of what my March, 1992 sketch shows.

The tanks also are longer than my sketch shows, extending the full length of the d/b housing, but my sketch certainly was not precise.

I have no explanation as to why my sketch shows a different arrangement. Either the unit in question was different, or had been modified, or I drew the sketch incorrectly, any of which is possible. The drawing does not show the insulation on the pipe curving around the back of the rear radiator fan.

A work in progress. It’s not contest quality but will look good on the layout for operations sessions at the club. Athearn RTR DCC, no sound GP 35. Thank you guys for all the pictures and help. I’m going to be happy to run it.

I still have the running gear and fuel tank to dirty up as well as add a few more details.

    Thanks for looking!

All finished and ready to run with the group. Weathered with Pan Pastels and acrylic paints. This one has been fun

    Thanks for looking!

Looks great Dale!!! You have made good progress on your layout early this winter season. I've been trying to work on my layout more but life keeps getting in the way. Hopefully things will settle down soon? LOL

Dale, I'm sending you a PM.

    Hi Joe,

I sent you a reply. Hopefully we can get together soon! I wish I could get more done but that 4 letter work (work) keeps getting in the way! Plus I seem to chase rabbits all the time as this last project proves!

My next step is to get the rails painted so I can add ballast, that is going to be my focus shortly. It’s about time for the big trade show in Vegas our company does every year and I fixing to start getting the displays ready to go so December will be spent working on a lot of that stuff. So...... I will work on it when I can.

Anyway, check your PM, try to make it to the club. I can show you the throttle there way better.

    Thanks,
    Dale

I picked this little guy up at the OKC Train Show yesterday. He hadn’t been treated too well during his life. When I got him the sunshade on the engineers side was gone, as was the bell and no radio antenna. The original Athearn couplers were in place but one was broke. The paint was chipping off the hand rails. I rigged a bell to work till I can get some more detail parts ordered along with other items. I added a Digitrax decoder and touched him up a bit. No sound in this one, but he runs pretty smoothly. Gotta love the orange and white!

Can someone who has one of these tell me what the 2 holes behind the back engineers window was for?

    Thanks,
    Dale

Dale, there was a winterizing window that came with the model for the right side.

Great find Dale!!! There's a great 1:1 scale photo of 319 in the Frisco Archives.

I want to decal a SW1500 road number 356 to correspond with my birth month and year. For my wife, Cynthia, I want to decal a MP15DC road number 362 for the same reason as mine.

    Did Frisco use those?

Thanks for taking time to answer.

On some, but I can't find any pictures of the engineer's side of 319 to determine applicability.

I found some pictures of 319, none of them showed that had a storm window on it. I will figure out how to plug the holes at some point and touch uP the paint.

We did some switching operations on the POCR tonight using the Port 1500 and the Frisco 1500. The new 1500 (Frisco) did just fine. Other than the livery, it fit right in to the operation. I may have to find another one and paint it in the Port livery. This guy stays in Frisco colors.

Hi Joe and everyone! I hope the holidays went well for you all and Santa was good to you!
I’ve had a bit of time free and have started the extension into the closet to put in trackage for Terra Nitrogen Fertilizer Plant. The extended lead will cross the Vertigris River and is a simple lift-out bridge. This will give us more places to go with cars. I’m looking forward to getting it all installed.

We are now running 2 locomotives on the layout for operations and it looks like it is working quite well. We may be able to host 2 two man crews for Ops Sessions, provided they are good friends of course!

Joe- I hope you are doing better buddy! We need to get together soon.

    Thanks for looking in!

Dale, looks good. Today has been a great day, felt good all day. We had breakfast with a good friend to start and only had a couple of errands to run. It was cold weather today around 32° for the high so we hurried with the errands to get back home where it is warm. Also went to Rema Bible School last night to see the Christmas lights, they said there are two million lights on display. Beautiful sight.

good to see you in this forum. And good to see that you have seen the light, railroad-wise;)

I have been off this forum for a while, but now that life (both home and work-wise) has settled to a full roar, I felt an overpowering urge to return to this forum.

I like what you did to the 717. I too have a torpedo-boat '35, painted in the black &yellow colors purchased at a train show. It goes well with my regular '35s, even though it is a Bachmann model.

    Hi Bob,

Glad to see you back amongst us! I’m also glad things have slowed down for you a bit. Life sure has a way of deterring our hobby time! We are staying busy here and now mowing season has started again!

I enjoyed doing 717 a bunch. I getting pretty partial to the older roads, they kept things pretty clean compared to today’s railroads. We are trying to do operations sessions on the layout, maybe one of these days I can get you out of Muskogee and up for a visit!

    Take care buddy,
    Dale

Cynthia and I were in Owasso today and I went by the rail yard to take some photos. It was loaded with covered hoppers but sorry to say no locomotives. I thought the graffiti on the hopper in the first photo was kinda neat.
