motorcar shed question

My current HO project is a motorcar shed (http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index....anza-western-railroad.11088/page-4#post-75481) I've never been in--or even near--a motorcar shed. My knowledge of motorcars is almost non-existent.

On the floor between the rails, would the planks be oily / greasy? Did motorcars drip oil and make a mess? The stain I used on the boards around the rails is too dark unless the motorcar caused the mess.

    Any input is appreciated.

    Thanks,

Not much grime and oil from the car, but all the other stuff in the shed would provide some. Most all these had no floor, which was rock or dirt. Some had "Branch Line" ties with "light" rail tacked down for the car to set on. These sheds were full of track tool's, oil can's for Switch lube, oil burning lantern's, Gasoline and parts.

Ended up using a tan color for the interior. The gray I had was way too dark. The floor is basically done; walls are almost done. Still have to paint the exterior. Thanks for the input regarding the floor. I redid it in an attempt to give it a somewhat more realistic appearance. The shed isn't going to be quite as true to life as I wanted. But with the framed interior walls, a pot belly stove, cans and stuff, a lantern hanging on the wall, etc., I decided to get more light into the building so you could see the inside. That meant having windows, which the real railroad wouldn't have wanted.

WOW - That's great detail on the construction!
Maybe Bill J. can answer this, but I doubt they would have had a "stove".
I would think with the gasoline and oil it would have been asking for a fire?

Good question. Maybe someday I'll be modeling a burned motorcar shed....Got the depot buff (actually TTX yellow) on the walls last night.

Typically they didn't have stoves. If someone was around the shed too long they just lost their job and could get warm on their own. The Tan is a good pick, seems they could buy tan paint pretty cheap. They painted everything that color.
