I am the digital archivist for the Missouri Pacific Historical Society. I was sorting scans today from a recently donated slide collection, and found this car, SLSF 109902 stenciled for "Ice Service Only". Thought I would share it. I do not have a date or location, but the photographer was from Carthage, MO, and traveled the greater surrounding area.
Nice Ted! Thanks for posting this picture. It does not look like any of the SLSF reefers of which we have seen pictures. Those have been older wood side vintage. I wonder what is the heritage of this car? Ken
See this image of an American Refrigerator Transit (ART) reefer, which was a part of the tie gang's outfit. It was used for ice service. http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index.php?attachments/art_131584_tie_gang_lenexa-jpg.19193/
Thanks Karl. Cars look closely similar. They must have bought one or more old steel American Refrigerator Transit (ART) reefers from its owners the Wabash and Missouri Pacific buddies to use as ice cars for the steel gangs. Makes sense. K
There is more discussion on these cars here. Wanted: M of W equipment Photos I posted a photo of SLSF 109901 here, part of the same thread. Wanted: M of W equipment Photos So there were at least 2 of these on the roster.
