Workshop Wednesday

Discussion in 'General' started by yardmaster, Nov 15, 2017.

  1. Looks good from there Bill. Is your layout elevated in your garage?

  2. I am jumping the Wednesday gun because I know I will be busy tomorrow night. My FRISCO side projects are caught up now so I am back on the MKT wrecker build. It might not look like a lot of progress but getting it to primer is a monumental step for the assembly. I hope to get it sprayed with chipping fluid and white in the next week or so. After primer I shot it with a mix of Alclad burnt exhaust and jet exhaust to give a dark steel look where the paint has chipped on the edges.

The cab was primed and then shot black to check the bodywork. Then it will get Alclad too.

The drivers side window will roll up and down so that has been the current project with it. The glass is a test piece then I will put in the finished piece toward completion:

I got the pulleys for the winch built from nylon washers:

Snatch block for main cable built the same way:

    Thanks for checkin it out!

Don, I always thought your locomotives are very interesting to see!!! May I suggest you start an album for your model efforts. Please include your work in progress.

    More hotel room models.

Accurail MKT Boxcar. Been in this thread a few times. Working on the brake rigging:

I need to do the same thing with my Frisco SS cars (Accurail #7108).

So bright, it hurts my eyes. I think I need to start weathering my cars.

Tichy PFE Reefer. More brake rigging:

I need just one more Athearn RTR SD40-2 to complete the entire class of SD40-2 locomotives roster'ed on our Frisco. Took me a few try's but I got that cantankerous printer to print the 951's numbers.
Here we are 3 at a time 951, 953, 955. Just need the 950 now :). A dose of weathering and into service these old work horses go. Still my favorite loco to model and operate (although I wish they all had extended range Dyn brakes).

    Thanks Keith.
I might try some different , for me, weathering tactics.

I gotta a question for you though. The thing is. I always enjoyed these EMD's, when you put the reverser in, and put it FWD or Reverse, it was like calling the platoon to attention, there was a slit increase in RPM, then the units responded to the commands of the engineer, is this attended to in DCC? Also, can I send you a chassis without the shell on a loco for DCC and sound installation? Reason is. I have sent a few locos to installers for other folks, that came back to me with handrails and other details either gone or wiped clean, almost like the details are not as important as the DCC.
Like I say, just a question for our local expert. :)

Steve, your model pulleys are fantastic!!! It's amazing what a modeler can do with what some people call trash and be able to make something beautiful. One time at Boeing, we were talking about a Gerber cutting machine used to lay up composite materials. I was busy making a HO scale model of a Gerber while we were talking. At first some people thought I wasn't paying attention but saw my model and realized I was. All of the material I was using came out of the trash and I used plastic string from a pair of ear plugs to represent the electrical cables. We ended up making a 120ft by 60ft model of the bond shop of the future. Our scale was one inch equals one foot. The model even made it in the Boeing company newspaper.

Tom, one can program in an acceleration delay (CV 3) that will allow the prime mover to notch up before the locomotive will begin to move.

Yes, you can send a chassis for sound installation, but I need a little more clarification about what chassis/body so I can determine potential clearance issues. I understand the concern about handrails, etc. I am very mindful of that when I do an installation, but most of the damage I have seen is caused by improper packaging when the locomotives are sent to me. One can't roll up a locomotive in a paper towel and stuff it in a small box, then stuff that small box in peanuts or bubble wrap in a larger box. Most newer locomotives are shipped in a far superior packaging that protects details. Handrails can be protected by use of strips of foam, much like Atlas has typically done. I really would prefer to have chassis and shell.

  17. I know I will be occupied on Wednesday again this week so I'm going early again.
Tom, the 40's are great. I hope to have all the U25s at some point. Not sure why but I want to. Joe, did you happen to take any pictures of that model?

  18. Here is my entry for the week. While the wrecker project cures some paint. I knocked out three quickies for my dads layout. Two Genesis an a Tangent car so they didn't need much except some paint work.
He had picked up the Landmark car was damaged before he got it so I had to patch the roofwalks and hide it with rust. Same with one end. So it got weathered heavier than we really wanted but it was to hide repairs. Almost done in these pics.
The white box is pretty filthy to look like it is a 1980 or later piece so it could be used with BN patched stuff even. The Airslide just like it came from Tangent.

Athearn BB GP7 conversion progress... (roof) filled the gaps n low spots with putty, let it dry, filled the shrinkage, sanded. Pics don't really show much difference from the last update. Mark Twain Hobbies called to tell me some of my detail parts are in. Woot...

Way too much on the plate last week, so I'll go for a double-feature this week.

Finished the lattice work for my billboard that was prevalent in the 1940s. Laid out 4 parallel rows of styrene strip with spacers and taped each end down, followed by adding the perpendicular pieces. I left the latter a little long and then trimmed them to fit.

Next: more line poles. The left is the standard ROW height for MP 21 just south of Olathe. Used some of the old B&B plans that Karl posted for dimensions. For the numbers, I started with Wallthers black numeral/white background number board decals from an old MoP EMD set, but botched it badly. Somewhere I'd downloaded an EMD Numbed Boardfont from the B&O Historical Society site and printed. The right pole is for the Loula St grade crossing. The ruler shows heights, and "forgive me, Father, for I have sinned." It was a freebie from one of Richard Graviett's "Operation Lifesaver" sessions.
