I am guessing east southeast as the depot should have been out of frame to the right. Look at post #17 for reference.
I found this in the Missouri State Historical Society online collection. Bolivar Depot Construction Ca 1914 Ralph Gravely Collection Shsmo by Oldguy posted Apr 17, 2017 at 2:57 PM
Interesting photograph Bob. Looks like Bring your Dog to Work Day. I always assumed that the Bolivar "Spanish-Theater" style or whatever one calls it and its brethren would have been stucco over brick or block, rather than what looks to clearly be frame construction. Best Regards,
Chris, On the depot plans it stated 2" x 6" walls, but yeah, the construction seems weird. Another thing the photograph answers is why the depot plans differ from what various photographs show. It would appear that the depot was in fact built per plans, but sometime later the express room door was covered up and moved to the other side into the main waiting room. I assume that the freight house seen in the back was the original depot? By the way, I have searched all over the Missouri archive digital collection and this photograph never came up using the "standard" search terms, such as depot, Frisco, Bolivar, etc. It came up while doing a search for Walnut Grove. Go figure.
Indeed, I've had weird luck searching there, too. For what it is worth, they have just broken ground for a new State Historical Society of Missouri Headquarters in Columbia, MO. It will be much larger than their current catacomb-like location in Ellis Library off of Hitt Street. It will also much more accessible for the non-campus researcher. Definitely a gem Bob. Thanks for finding and for sharing.
Hello, I am working on a little research project focusing on when, or if, passenger service was discontinued at various stations across America. I am using a semi-random selection method. In this case, the hometowns of various politicians. I am trying to find out when passenger service was discontinued at the Bolivar, MO depot. Bolivar is the hometown of Missouri Governor Mike Parsons. Thanks to the resources on this site, the timetables, I was able to narrow it down to between 1960 and 1962, to the best of my ability. It is incredibly difficult to find information online and this site is an incredible and rare resource, especially given that the railroad is not the size of Union Pacific or something like that. Anyway, if you know anything more specific on when passenger rail service to Bolivar, Missouri was discontinued, it would be a big help. TL;DR-Do you know anything specific about when passenger service to Bolivar, Missouri was discontinued? All I could find was between 1960 and 1962. Thanks!
Ben, For very specific information as such, my go-to guy on this site is Karl Brand (Karl). By the way, we are extremely proud of what we have here. It is supported solely by volunteers and donations.
I believe you are off by a decade. If I am not mistaken, passenger service between Springfield, MO and Clinton, MO, the segment including Bolivar, ended when trains No 20 and No 21 were discontinued. Karl indicates these trains were discontinued in May 1954. Please see the following link. http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index.php?threads/clinton-sub-passenger-trains.2855/page-3#post-18064 Passenger service from Kansas City, MO to Clinton, MO technically lasted longer, with passengers being able to ride the caboose on trains No 58 and No 59 until the end of passenger service. Thank you! I actually realized I referred to a timeframe for Arthur, North Dakota, whoops! I had actually narrowed it down to between 1951 and 1963, which is pretty imprecise, so this information is incredibly helpful! Thank you so much!
