    Hi, guys, (and gala!),
I just got a great deal on5 Bachman g scale passenger kits. ( $55.00 for the bunch!)
I was looking at the paint and lettering diagrams at the Missouri University site, and would like some opinions sbout the colors to
use. They show a green body and red roof. I'd guess Pullman Green for the body, but the roof?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What are you attempting to replicate?

Trying for a pre-1900 look. I know the cars are probably not prototype, but I've never been a rivet counter! If you have seen the Bachman "Big Hauler" passenger cars, then you know the style. Just want to get close.

While I am sure that there are more folks more knowledgeable than I who can fill in some of the blanks here I suspect that the "red" spoken of is something akin to either a boxcar red or a mineral red color, which were rather common on early railroad cars. A redder color would have been difficult to maintain, because of the soot from locomotives, making it expensive to maintain.

Thanks, Jerry. That would make the roof "Rustoleum Primer" if memory of what Don once said is clear! Pullman green for the balance of car. From the different blogs I've searched, Tamiya Luftwaffe dark green is close to Pullman Green.
I'll wait for more comments until I go to the paint shop!

Since this post appears twice, I am not sure which is active, so I have chosen the more recent one. Here is an interchange chart developed by Microscale so you can see what colors still available match the old Floquil shades. As far as the roof goes, I'd use a boxcar red since that would have been in current usage anyway.

Take a look at the link to the car diagrams. They reportedly were painted with actual car paint and have a coat of varnish over the painted areas. Passenger car color (pre-WW2) was described by Lee Buffington as being very dark like a ripe olive, or nearly black. Those diagrams appear to confirm that. The passenger roof color (with varnish) looks like Crayola "Brick Red".
