As some of you know, I started scratchbuilding a 1060-1069 class 4-6-4, probably over 20 years ago. It's been languishing at about 60% completion since then. With PSC now working on the production of these models, I had sent the model along with a large package of drawings, photos and whatever else I could dredge up to them to aid in the project. About a month ago Mark sent the model back and I decided to finish it. I originally was going to do it with skirts since I could "cheat" and skip a lot of detail under the running boards. I decided to buy a skirted one and finish this one as the 1068, which will be black with the Doric striping and lettered in gold. This is actually after my modeling era of 1943 but since it's my layout and I like the way 1068 looked that's how it's gonna roll.
The model is basically done, and as is my practice, I take a lot of pictures so I can blow them up and stare at them to see if anything is cockeyed, forgotten or wrong. If I don't find any reason not to, this will advance to the microblaster for a thorough clean up, eliminate all excess solder and prepare for painting.
So far all I've seen is that the right rear tender truck chain needs to be taken up a few links.
This method seems to work for me. I've worked on stuff for months before and look at it every day, yet something will pop right up out of a picture. Sometimes somebody else will spot it right away.
One thing that is making me crazy is that I can't find what I did with the motor and gearbox. I had set it up on an idler arm with a PSC idler gearbox and it ran like a watch. I also need to make a boiler weight.
I will post more stuff after she is painted.

Whoo-wee! That is out of this world. Picture #3 is outstanding! I wish the scratchbuilding fairy would leave an N scale version of that engine under my pillow...

Don, my friend, I am speechless! I remember when you started this project. Well done!

Did they steam and ride as good as they looked?

This, sir, is a great example of why I can't fathom why anyone wouldn't want to model Frisco steam. By my standards which are nowhere near as good from a quality standpoint, 20+ years is not too bad.

How did you come up with such a nice tender ladder? Everything about it looks "right;" I've tried several scratchbuilding techniques but none that seem to work.

    Best Regards,

Don, I haven't commented up to now, because I am having a tough time pushing my eyeballs back into place - and holding my jaw off the floor.
I am just lost for words to praise your talents ... Ditto all the comments above!

Stick a fork in it, she's done. Got the Tsunami, etc, in her, dirtied her up with chalks (I don't know why, but it always looks a lot dirtier in the photos) and will give it a shot of overspray to kill the weathering a little bit.
Runs good and is ready to release to the roundhouse formeman.

Don - I love it, well done! Those Hudson's were very good looking, and you have captured that nicely.

    What could the 4-6-4's pull up Rolla or Dixon hills vs a 1500? (Ballpark - 90%, 80%, 75%, 65%, ?????) Just curious.

Dig out one of your employee TT and look at the tonnage ratings. I'm not where my TTs are right now.
I just managed to give it a 5' flight to the floor and the only damage was the wires ripped out of the DCC plug and the bell got knocked out of the hanger. Talk about luck.
I almost puked. She's nearly ready to go at it again.

The oldest timetable among ETTs on the site is April 20, 1952. Its page 15 gives tonnage classes for the 1500's, 4200's and 4500's but none for 1050's or 1060's. Page 15 tells the tonnages for the tonnage classes. Odd note, worthy of another topic, is the range of difference of tonnage class among the 1500's; 1500-1501 (and others) rate a 56 while 1522 (and others) rate a 66. I wonder why that was. Did Don's influence on 1522 reach back in time to 1952? :)

1522 and some of the others were booster equipped and that would have upped their tonnage ratings.
