The closing days of 2012 have brought the next chapter in the life of a veteran railroad locomotive. The American Steam Railroad Preservation Association (ASR), a 501c3 Not-for-Profit Corporation headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, and Midwest Railway Preservation Society (MRPS), a 501c3 Not-for-Profit Corporation headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio are proud to announce an agreement to house the restoration and continued preservation of ASR’s steam locomotive SLSF 1352. Built in 1912 by the American Locomotive Company of Schenectady, NY, this 2-8-2 Mikado type served the St. Louis-San Francisco Railroad (commonly called the Frisco) until 1956 when she was retired and placed on public display in Swoop Park in Kansas City, Missouri. In an effort to save the 1352 from neglect and vandalism, she was later moved from the park to a storage location in rural, Illinois. 1352 will now be brought to the MRPS’s former Baltimore and Ohio Railroad roundhouse located in Cleveland, Ohio for completion of her restoration to operable status. After this restoration is complete she will begin a new career pulling passenger excursion trains.

This agreement unites SLSF 1352 with another well-known Mikado type locomotive, former Grand Trunk Western (GTW) steam locomotive #4070, which is under restoration in the Cleveland facility as well. The B&O Roundhouse will be one of very few locations in the United States where visitors will be able to view the full restoration of two large steam locomotives being conducted simultaneously.

The ceremonial signing of the contract between these two organizations will take place at Noon on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at the roundhouse, located at:

2800 W. 3rd Street
Cleveland Ohio 44113

After the signing representatives from both groups will be on-hand to take questions about locomotives 1352 and 4070 from 12pm - 4pm during the previously scheduled Open House event. We encourage everyone to stop by and see the roundhouse and meet both groups!

SLSF 1352 was built in 1912 as a Consolidation-type (2-8-0) steam locomotive and rebuilt in during World War II into a Mikado-type (2-8-2) locomotive. In her present configuration the locomotive weighs about 161 tons. The locomotive’s operating boiler pressure is 195 pounds per square inch.

GTW 4070 was built in 1918 to the standard United States Railroad Administration “Light Mikado” design. She is also a product of the American Locomotive Company’s Schenectady Plant. The locomotive weighs about 146 tons and has an operating boiler pressure of 200 pounds per square inch.
Founded in 2005, the American Steam Railroad Preservation Association goal is to restore, preserve and operate steam locomotives and other historic railroad equipment for the public’s enjoyment and education. ASR will bring 1352’s smaller parts to Ohio to begin work on them while they continue to raise the money to move the locomotive to the Cleveland roundhouse. Several ASR fundraising events will be announced in the Spring of 2013 to kick start this project.

ASR President Steven M. Harvey, commenting on the partnership between these two organizations, said “Since its inception, the American Steam Railroad Preservation Association has encouraged partnerships within the railroad preservation industry for the benefit of both sides. With this agreement in place, both ASR and MRPS will benefit from their mutual knowledge and expertise. In a nod to history, they’ll also be sharing a facility that was designed for steam locomotive rebuilds and maintenance. 1352 will now be moved to the B&O Roundhouse where we will complete her restoration to service. This is great news for all who love steam locomotives. SLSF 1352 and GTW 4070 are great representatives of America’s railroad history, and we’re excited to help preserve that history for future generations. I urge anyone who shares our passion to join both groups in working toward two operating steam locomotives.”

This seems to be exciting news. The 1300-series Mikes sure were odd looking ducks.

Good news for that old engine. Hopefully when she is restored she will make some trips down on home rails throughout some of the 13 states that Frisco served.

Good news to hear. I had heard rumors about this earlier this year.

Side note sister loco 1351 will also be getting restored by a group in Memphis. I'm friends with someone in the group and IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY he said they plan to move it from it's current location to a museum and restore it after the 2014 NMRA meeting in Memphis. I'd have to ask and see if that is still the case.

Very good news, indeed. I believe that once it becomes operable, there should be more operational standard gauge Frisco steam locomotives than any other railroad out there, which is a credit to the Frisco for saving so many.

Frisco Fans,

I want to let you know that its now a done deal. The contract was signed this weekend for a stall to be leased to rebuild 1352 at 2800 W. 3rd Street in Cleveland Ohio. We'll be doing the rebuild in stall #2 of the 1905 B&O built roundhouse. If you want to keep up on what is going on with the locomotive I would encourage everyone to sign up for our email updates at http://www.americansteamrailroad.org or join our facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/americansteam Please be aware we are now into Phase 3 of 6 which is the home coming phase to get her out of Taylorville, IL. So this does mean in the coming months there will have to be fundraisers to get the money to move her from Taylorville to Cleveland and I hope some folks will want to make a small contribution to the cause if they possibly can.

If I knew who the moderators were and if they would be willing I could send them updates to post on here so everyone who does not want to go on Facebook or sign up for the email updates will still get updates via this board.

Steve, By all means, post the updates right here. Keep up the good work.
You can continue to provide hyperlinks to the site and fundraising activities for 1352.

BTW, I moved the thread to a more appropriate, topic specific location.

Former Frisco steamer finds new home in Ohio

CLEVELAND – American Steam Railroad Preservation Association will store and rebuild its former St. Louis-San Francisco Railroad 2-8-2 No. 1352 at Midwest Railway Preservation Society's roundhouse in Cleveland. ASRPA is based in Columbus, but its locomotive is currently stored in Illinois. An agreement between the two organizations will allow ASRPA to conduct its work in the former Baltimore & Ohio roundhouse owned by MRPS.

ASRSA plans to restore to the locomotive to operable condition and use it to pull passenger excursions. The group plans to move small parts to the roundhouse immediately to begin work on them. It will hold a series of events in 2013 to raise funds to move the locomotive itself. The roundhouse already houses MRPS's former Grand Trunk Western Railroad 2-8-2 No. 4070, currently undergoing restoration.

Alco built No. 1352 for the Frisco in 1912 as a 2-8-0. The railroad rebuilt it into a 161-ton 2-8-2 during World War II and retired in 1956. The city of Kansas City, Mo., displayed the locomotive at Swoop Park upon its retirement from active service. Preservationists later moved the locomotive from the park to secure storage in Illinois to prevent vandalism.

The two organizations will hold a ceremonial contract signing and open house at the roundhouse on Nov. 24 from noon to 4 p.m. The roundhouse is located at 2800 W. 3rd Street, Cleveland, Ohio 44113. Hello Group...At our last board meeting for the year our CMO is asking that we start the hunt for any and all drawing's that could be used for the rebuild of 1352 or the 1350 - 1356 for that class of locomotive. Sad to say I have not had any luck with finding a former group or person who might be able to point us to a specific group or location. So I'm asking folks on this board to help out to see if they might know of someone or some location that these might have been placed. Not that the locomotive can't be rebuilt without them but it sure does make it easier to rebuild it with the right blueprints.

The first person to contact would be Louis Griesemer with the Springfield Underground in Springfield, MO. Louis is also a member of this group. He purchased most of the material from the former Frisco Railroad Museum in Springfield including their paper archives. That would be the first place they might be located if they survived long enough to have been donated after the BN purchased the Frisco. After that, I'm not sure unless some individual acquired them.

When Hungerford was Frisco President, he ordered everything to do with Frisco steam Engines destroyed. My Dad told me years ago that all of the drawing for steam engines in Kansas City shops were transported to Springfield, MO, put in a pill and burned! The drawing at Springfield, MO were taken to Kansas City and also burned. I am pretty sure the Frisco Museum never had any Steam Engine drawings and it will be very hard to find any. You might have better luck going to Baldwin Locomotive Archives.

That is very disappointing they did that. We'll do the best making sure we make new ones as she gets fixed. Thanks for the information and help people have given me. I have been able to get some good photos of 1352 due to folks on here pointing me to the former frisco railroad musem owners.

Would you like me to send you all of the 1352 photos I took over the years; I'm talking about detail photos not just the 3/4 front side roster shot? If so contact me at renapper@centurylink.net because I will need your s-mail address.
