    Mike:

Gathering material on Greenfield and Northern (Greenfield to Aurora, MO).

Looking for photo of depots in Greenfield (not the S. Greenfield Frisco depot), Pennsboro, Miller, Mt. Vernon and Aurora (not Frisco depot). Also interested in any photos of equipment, trackside structures, track, bridges, etc.

    Any suggestions/help will be appreciated.

Re: Mt Vernon Branch, Springfield Sub Stations and Mile Posts

I am currently visiting my inlaws who moved to Mount Vernon in 2009. I am curious about the railroad here.

From what I can tell from my 1926, 1933, 1937, and 1948 Official Guides, the line was cut back from Greenfield by World War II. In 1948, the line is not on the Frisco Railroad map, but the Table 48 shows freight service from Aurora to Elliott to Mount Vernon to Miller.

A footnote says:" Freight train, carrying passengers Aurora to Mount Vernon and return, leaves Aurora, daily except Sunday, between 1 pm and 2 pm."

As for Miller, Missouri I do not know if the train ran as needed in 1948 or they just did not carry passengers north of Miller.

    Questions:

    1. When was the the line between Greenfield and Miller abandoned?

    2. When was the line between Miller and Mount Vernon abandoned?

    3. When was the line between Mount Vernon and Aurora abandoned?

The Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce on Loop 44 has a Frisco Caboose on the property. They also have a Point Paper discussing the rail served industries in Mount Vernon, MO and some of the freight volumes.
Doris of the Chamber is very friendly and wants to know more about the SLSF in Mount Vernon.

The Frisco abandoned the line between So. Greenfield and Miller during 1934, and transfered the Aurora Branch from the Northern Division to the Eastern Division. ETT #30B, January 23, 1938 shows no scheduled service on the line at that time; service was rendered by extras. The track between South Greenfield and Greenfield was left in place and was served by the Ash Grove Sub locals; this segment is still extant. The 3.6% grade from South Greenfield to Greenfield was the steepest on the Frisco.

The track between Miller and Mount Vernon was taken up during 1950, and the BN abandoned the line between Mount Vernon and Aurora during 1984.

Carnation had a condensed-milk processing plant at Mt Vernon, and it was the principal revenue generator for the line. The Frisco also delivered coal to the power plant at the Mt Vernon Sanatorium.
