Modified Bachmann 4-8-2 1502 & 4422

    I have posted in mktjames album, pictures of my modified 1502, a Bachmann heavy 4-8-2 . A coonskin was added to the front, air tanks to the top, delta trailing truck on the engine and a MDC ATSF tender shell mounted on a Mantua 6 axle frame. Second my modified 4422 is a Bachmann light 4-8-2. Scullen disc were added to spoke drivers, air pumps to front deck and a delta trailing truck on the engine.

    Ditto! I'd like to know too. Also, great conversion on the tender for the 1502. Do the tender steps interfere with the trucks turning at all?

    One quick question: On the tender, did you use the MDC Roundhouse metal underframe, or is that the Mantua underframe you used?

    I made the scullen disc from thin aluminum sheet and 3/4 inch round stamp hole punch ,then four small holes stamped in the disc a fifth hole is needed to fit around the siderod crank pins , it took about four disc to make a good pattern. I epoxied the disc on the spokes and they fit inside the tires. The tender chassis is stock Mantua long haul tender and the wheel clearance for turning will do my 22 inch yard radius. I have more detail work to do as the Mantua trucks need some of the brake detail removed to be more Frisco in appearance. The engines need some running board work, but that will have to wait till after the TWMRC open house. Frisco projects are on going , need super detailing and I will post pictures on the progress.     Looks good James. I like your approach for the Scullen drivers. You fooled me as I thought you had added new drivers to the loco. Persist! ~mike

    Likewise here. This makes me think that a 4300-class might be within my reach someday based on James' approach!

    I have received several questions on my mountain 1502 4-8-2 conversions. I started with an undecorated heavy mountain that is diecast. I decaled it with the white microscale Santa Fe steam set to get the large tender numbers. I cut the center Frisco white script out of the microscale freight decal set for the cab lettering. The air tanks were scratch built from brass tubing with the ends epoxy filled and sanded round. The lines were made from brass wire. The tender shell is the MDC Santa Fe oil tender I bought off e-bay. The tender frame is Mantua long haul with 6 wheel trucks. I have since taken the walk boards off and am making straight ones from brass to be more Frisco in appearance.     I posted under mktjames album pictures of the modified walkboards for my 1502 engine. This was done using brass strips hand files to a cardboard pattern I made. Compare new pics 1 & 2 to old pics 8 & 12. Next I will work on the 1502 tender top and then modify the walkboards on 4422. mktjames

    How are you attaching them to the boiler?

    The walkboards are attacted to the boiler by drilling holes in the boiler and epoxying steel wire in the boiler and under the brass walkboards. This method was done on the old Cary USRA boiler, now Bowser. mktjames
