Does anyone remember how to remove the body shell from the above unit? I have a couple I want to repaint, and for the life of me, I can't remember how to release them from the chassis without breaking something.

As I recall you gently squeeze the body shell just above the walkways, first one end and then the other lifting gently at the same time. Once the body shell is off the walkway it should lift off.

Start by removing the handrails to prevent damage. Squeeze in on the sides of the front of the hood just above the walkway and pull upwards. The rear should follow.

Yup, Robert and Keith have it. The Atlas/Kato RS-3's have little brittle (after all these years) tabs on the four corners that must be squeezed inward and to lift the shell off. Basically, right about the middle at the base of the radiator on the long hood, and the the battery boxes near the end on the short. To remove the walkway, you sort of have to jiggle it some for it to pass by the motor.

As above: Don't forget to remove the handrails!

Thanks everyone. I knew about the handrails, and I was pretty sure about squeezing the shell, but when it didn't lift off easily, I thought perhaps there was something I had forgotten.

Done. Worked like a champ. Now it's on to the paint shop.
