Some great work on these pages. I'm busy gathering brass engine projects and castings to sell and clean out things a little. I don't know if there are any brass mongers on Frisco.org.

    Howdy All,

Sorry that I missed last week all together. A couple of long work days last week kept me away from the layout.

    A few offerings this week:

The scratch-built wood culvert just south of the Weir Depot is going in:

    Culvert-sm-no-ballast.JPG

You can see that I put in some sculptamold (colored with brown paint) after gluing in place . Will get some ballast on the top and fill in the ditch with vegetation and stagnant water.

    Structures:

Worked to add details, including a back-dated door to the Mine Mount Models "Randy's Garage".

    IMG_1074 (2).JPG

Still needs some signage and weathering. Unfortunately, I don't readily have access to a color printer right now, so set this off to the side until I can get some printed.

I worked to finish up the AMB General Store...also needs signs and weathering.

    General-Store.JPG

I also added this AMB house model, the Drinkwater place...missing steps, due to losing the parts carrier with those pieces...more on order.

    house-back.JPG

Another nice kit from AMB, and used leftover shingles from the Mine Mount Kit.

Currently under construction are 2 of my last 6 kits (swearing to build them all before buying more).

The Inter-Action Hobbies "Keeger's Garage", but building without the garage to serve as another storefront on the main street in Weir City.

    Keegers-Garage-sm.JPG

This kit has some of the better instructions that I have seen. Hopefully post some progress soon.

and another small AMB garage that was bought for the door (used on the Mine Mount Models kit). Since it won't have a door, I am adding some framing on the inside for detail:

    garage-framed-sm.JPG
On both of these last two, I am going to apply some weathering techniques from watching some Jason Jensen YouTube videos. Pretty good stuff by Jason and, hopefully there will be some passable results to post in the near future Wednesdays...

Finally, I put together a couple of diorama boards for photographing models when the layout is stowed. Diorama-o-rama!
Looking for some input on ideas....still a pair of blank slates. One I think will have a track along a main street with room for posing buildings and a lowered "siding" track for posing trackside businesses. The other is still in endless possibility mode.

Oh, and with the boy off at college, I got my office / small workbench back last week. Woohoo!

Well, take care all and catch you soon.

  3. Here is a couple projects I am working on this week. Tangent just released their 86' 4 door boxcars last week. Trying to get this one wrapped up for someone and get some pics for the Tangent site. Not everyone needs a car this big for sure but they sold out in two days. Hopefully a Frisco car will appear in a future run of these. It's a LOT of car to paint.

Here's the start of the fade. I use white, then terra cotta, then light yellow then gray oils.

After all the fade is dry the lettering needs cleaned off so it doesnt just blend in with the car.

A CR car but the look he was after. It is more subtle in proper light than the phone photos look.

Nice work Steve. A great article on those cars in the Model Railroad News this month.

  5. Thanks Bob. I don’t get that anymore. I used to. Sounds like there are lots of request for another run, more road names and then an 8 for version. Surprising that it is so popular knowing the average layout can’t handle the size.

The level of details on these cars are absolutely amazing, especially the under carriage.
These cars should be place upside down on the sidings during an op session and or open house to reveal what viewers are really missing!

  9. I agree John. I think that with lots of detailed freight cars.

    Hey All,

I have been watching a few structure building videos that include weathering techniques. Before destroying a larger structure, I worked on this little AMB garage kit. It is missing the doors because I used them on the Mine Mount Models garage kit. I thought I would frame the interior and follow some of the methods that Jason Jenson has on his YouTube site: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwtCiywyxpf5ed785KbAAQA

Here are a couple of shots:

    Garage-Weathered.JPG Garage-Weathered-2.JPG

Not too bad for a first try. Turns out that you can invest a lot of time in a 2 x 3 inch structure kit. Complemented by @Jim James truck model and drums. The main problem: too short of a doorway! I will need to add a short foundation or build up the ground a foot or so around it. Comments welcomed...need some tips before divining into a larger, more expensive kit.

    Hope All are Well,

    -Bob T.

Based on the era being modeled, cinder block or a stone foundation would be a good start.

That’s a fantastic structure with just enough detail and weathering to make it look very realistic. The interior really gives it life and a sense of realism.

  13. That garage is great looking Bob. I like John's idea for the stone foundation.

I worked on 802 some more this week:

  14. I also finished up the 86s from my last update. Here are some outdoor pics. I think the next episode of Whats Neat will include these cars too.

Dioramas are coming along. I was able to get some scenery down on this one over the weekend.

When able, I'm busy on two project engines. Another 4000 2-8-2 and 1045 4-6-2. Plenty of stuff to do after those two. Two more 4-6-2s and some others that are in process that I'm thinking of selling. Too much work, not enough time.
