Folks - During the Hindsight 20/20 virtual RPM today, Jered Slusher led off with a presentation on X72 Boxcar Prototypes and Models. In it, he shared a photo of CR #229328 with tape around the perimeter of the door, with the stated purpose of keeping water out. As I spent some of the breaks searching for the latest "Where Is It," I came across two photos in the Archive of Frisco boxcars that appear to have the same treatment. http://frisco.org/mainline/wp-conte...s-City-Missouri-on-May-22-1979-Jim-Wilson.jpg http://frisco.org/mainline/wp-conte...-18894-at-Modesto-California-in-June-1969.jpg It seems to be a rather labor-intensive way of sealing leaky doors, but considering that the heyday of boxcars was past in the last 10-12 years of the Frisco's existence, perhaps it was more desirable than a full door replacement. Thoughts?
If a boxcar was used for grain-loading and the door did not seal well against weather, I can see where an industry might try to protect the valuable cargo from weather in route, but I don't believe it would be very effective when trying to tape to a rusted or dirty surface.
Good point, Keith. Seems like more trouble than it’s worth. And ineffective at that. Didn’t want to put more on your plate, but I was thinking “this has Steve Hurt written all over it.” . Jered’s presentation featured all sorts of Frankenstein’s monsters in PC green with CR reporting marks, patch jobs, rust blobs and taped doors. I can send you the slides if you need modeling fodder.
I have seen his. He is occasionally on the same weathering forum I participate in. He is a great painter! Thanks!!
That was a great set of presentations yesterday. Sorry, I did not see you on the list of attendees, Chris. They ran around 180-200 most of the day.
Indeed...I was happy to see the turnout, Robert. I am afraid I wasn’t good about scrolling through the Participants listings. I was pretty engrossed when each session started, and during the breaks, I was tending to the garden and other neglected chores from three and a half days away from home. Looking forward to their next session.
