This evening I purchased a sheet of Masonite and finished another section of overhead valence for modules 01 thru 03 The rest of sheet will be for background on modules 01 thru 07. Cynthia is going to start painting the background this weekend, she does great work.

Cynthia and I hung up the new section of overhead valence over modules 01, 02 and 03 this morning. Have one more section to go over module 08, not sure if there will be another over modules 09, 10 and 11 where the layout goes across the room. Will make that decision after they are installed.

I'm going to work on the coal mine and saw mill within the next week. John had a couple photos that will work perfectly from the Mansfield Branch thread. Thank you John.

This afternoon I installed a piece of Masonite fascia on overhead valence for modules 02 and 03. Have two more pieces 14x96 for background on modules 04 thru 07 and will use the last piece for more fascia instead of background. Need one more sheet of Masonite to finish what I've done on the layout so far.

Some time soon will work on getting the water ready to pour on module 05, the Arkansas River is 43 inches wide and the layout is 12 inches deep.

Have a bottle of Woodland Scenics water but have not used it before. Any tips for this size of water 43x12 inches?

I have an Atlas RS1 and thinking about using a ESU LokPilot decoder. Would that be a good choice? My DCC is a Bachmann EZ Command Dynamis with controller, IR sensor and in a separate box is a Pro Box.

Yesterday evening I cut Masonite for the overhead valence fascia for modules 04 thru 07 and for modules 05 and 06. Was able to install the fascia for the overhead valence before bedtime.

This morning going to work on fascia for modules 05 and 06. Need to get some saber saw blades so I can cut land contours.

Later this afternoon will test fit the background for modules 04 thru 07 and mark key features that will be painted by Cynthia.

I finished the fascia for modules 05 and 06 and test fit the background for modules 04, 05 and 06. Will extend it to module 07 when I purchase some more Masonite, think two more sheets should finish all of it's projects.

I'm going to purchase LED lights this Saturday, can't wait to see the layout with good lighting.

    Looks like Masonite city. Haha

What color LED lights? There is a range available and, to me, the choice might be tricky for good model lighting.

Cool white is the LED that I'm thinking about.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

Joe, I would recommend LEDs in 4000K Color Temperature, the Cool White or Daylight, 5000K - 6000K is too blue.

Thank you Keith for your information, will be sure to look for the lights you recommend when I purchase them Saturday morning. The anticipation is overwhelming.

    Is it Saturday yet? Haha

This afternoon I extended benchwork for module 01 and set the module in place.

Have two more overhead valences to build for modules 01 and 08, will work on 01 in a few minutes. Need to purchase three boards to do the one for 08, have the Masonite for it already cut.

  16. Joe, for the water I would recommend thin pours. Also mix enough to pour the entire area so you do not end up with little ridges. Mix it slowly so you don’t create bubbles. If you get them let them raise to the top and pop. If they don’t try to pop them while it is still soft. Giant bubbles look bad in the water. Depending on what you are pouring on to it may soak up a lot of your first pour. Let us know how it goes. Good luck!

    Hey Joe,
You are getting some great advise about water on your MRR. It was a great concern of mine for a couple years. My water was like 6' by 14" on a winding river.
I managed to listen to some very accomplished modelers, here on the .org, as I was concerned about bubbles and just the shear size of a potential pour.
It turned out for me, that many layers of Gloss clear, over a base color was the best and easiest way for me, and I mean a cheap gloss, water cleanup finish coat ( OK, like 5-6 coats). If you want a ripple effect on your water use a very thick (paste type) gloss coat, on the finish coats, load your brush, then stab it into your finish. It takes a lot of material, but you can simulate wakes and such, very convincing.

I used that pour stuff one time, I also thought I had the area sealed up, with caulking and such. If you are convinced the pour stuff is the way you want to go, check 2-3 times to seal it up, and when your convinced it is sealed up, you better have something set up to catch any leak thru drips. I'm just saying, dont ask me how I found that out.

Take your time. Better to take a long time, than get in a hurry, and maybe mess sumthing up.

As Tom says, make certain that there is not the tiniest hole for the liquid to leak through; it will. One guy here in KC did not and poured a quart of Envirotex, only to find it on the floor.

Thank you Tom and Keith. Will definitely use your advice on pouring water and adding a drop cloth.

    Your help is greatly appreciated!!!

I've been in a carpenter mood lately, have two overhead valences for modules 01 and 08 to build and some rework on module 08 benchwork. There will be a tall steel trestle in the middle of module and the coal mine/sawmill will be located to the right, north.
