Worked on my house some more, built a porch:
Got primer on it and painted doors and windows, too.
Cut out clapboard for coal elevator:
Doors and windows came today, so I can start putting it together.
I prowled eBay and got 3 undecorated 50' auto cars, as in this thread: http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index.php?threads/50-exterior-braced-auto-boxcar.12879/
Seller said they were Walthers, but were MDC. Had odd trucks and brake gear and were poorly assembled, so cleaned up, rearranged parts, added weight, and cut off the sill and steps:

In the meantime, I found a Frisco decorated version, so it got the same treatment:

So now I need to find decals for the undecs...

Thanks Keith. A bit of a rush job on my part, trying to post before closing down for the evening.

Gary, I like your paint booth; it's very realistically lit and has lots of room for work.

Gary, if you are going to decal the undecorated models for the Frisco, keep in mind that the font is narrower than what is usually found in decal sets in order to fit the lettering between the ribs. I found this out the hard way.

When I was searching through my HO scale box I found the Frisco Imex Classic Railway Trucks purchased years ago.

Going to try my hand with weathering on the trucks before doing my N scale rolling stock. Finally have a good project for Workshop Wednesday. Will start after the first of July.

Steve or other members, what colors of pan pastels chalk should I buy to start out?

That's the drying area. The paint booth is even bigger. ;) Only problem is some little "inspectors" get stuck.

Thanks. I'm having some trouble finding decals sets that match the decorated car. I may have to buy 2 or 3 sets to cobble everything together. The small Frisco Lines Coonskin is a problem...
If I were smarter, I would have bought a similar car in Rock Island or SP or Mopac, and removed the lettering that wasn't needed. The huge placard is probably incorrect, too.

  8. joe if you go to eBay or Amazon there a sets just for weathering. You can buy singles but the sets are nice because you can mix colors to increase the colors per dollar. You will see earth tone sets, rust tone sets and black and white sets. All are useful.
To start I’d recommend the earth colors. Sets are not cheap, appx $40 but that will last a lifetime. Especially in N scale. That includes some applicators also if you apply that way.
Chalk pastels are similar and usually more colors for less money. They are easy to use and can be mixed also. But if you handle your trains much they will wear off. Also if you dulcoat the models after weathering, it cuts the effect of the pastels by 50 or 75%. Pan pastels don’t disappear with dulcoat.
Hope that helps? Any questions lmk I’ll help if I can.

Thank you Steve, your suggestions help me a lot. Will go to Amazon tonight and check them out.

    Hey All,

A bit late for Workshop Wednesday this week. These yahoos installing google fiber in the neighborhood cut off our internet and TV by accidentally sawing through an AT&T line somewhere nearby.

    IMG_20200701_100633.jpg

They are cutting into the pavement to install the fiber lines through the neighborhood.

Anyhow, I was totally tired of working on structure kits for the best part of June, and decided to catch up on some weathering. Here are the products:

Accurail 36-ft boxcar in AC&Y. I do like this one, similar to the Salt Lake and Denver car from earlier:

    IMG_1027-sm.JPG

I also had two Roundhouse (Athearn) truss rod cars that were originally MK&T. I renumbered one using the trick that you all showed me to remove just the car number, and the other was stripped and repainted as a Wichita Northwestern after a photo in a book on that line:

    IMG_1028-sm.JPG

    IMG_1029-sm.JPG

I also had a couple of stock cars. This one is from Accurail and comes as a Frisco car, but may not be prototypical:

    IMG_1026-sm.JPG

This one is a Proto 2000 Mather car. Prototypical, but maybe a bit later toward the transition era. It will look good with those GP-7s. These Proto 2000 have excellent, although delicate details.

    IMG_1031-sm.JPG

Still needs some work on the trucks. I think this car came from Keith, and you can see one of Jim's cars next to it. I was adding the scale size Kadee couplers to it while I was at it.

Well, I hope you are all staying safe and have a Happy 4th of July weekend!

  11. I'll go late too this week (since I am normally late for this). Here is a couple GP 7s I finished for a regular customer. I actually did one more of these for him but you get the idea. They are Atlas units with old Herald king decals. Sorry no Frisco but I have a couple of mine almost done. Maybe for next week.

  12. Joe did you find any pan pastels yet? I would highly recommend dulcoat first on those trucks. Its a good idea on any project but those are sure glossy.

Steve, not yet, probably Saturday. I'm going to check on LED lights tomorrow and get Masonite Sunday. Will use the Masonite for fascia and background on modules 04 thru 07 and fascia for overhead valence.

Gary, really liking that house. Also, it looks like you may be using rattle cans for your newfound auto boxcars. What colors/brands are you using?

    Best Regards,

Still very early in the build, no solder cleaning done, nor final leveling done. Very long way to go and its not Wednesday but here's what I've been chopping and bashing on for a while. Ton of stuff left to do on the engine, then build a tender.
Here's your first look at 1045. Don't know if I'm happy with the way it looks or not yet. 1045rf.JPG 1045r.JPG 1045l.JPG 1045b.JPG

Don - I have seven shots on file (from the archives) of SLSF 1045, a spiffy looking 4-6-2. Your model looks pretty good. The only comment I could offer involves the slightly up-grade boiler, side walkway and pilot, and the slightly downward slope of the Delta trailing truck mount. If there is a way to correct that a bit, you have another winner! Love the boiler face - they always look good with the coonskin headlight bracket. You nicely captured the slight hump of the boiler.

Sorry, just got back from the holiday. I pretty much rattle can everything with Rustoleum primers, including that house--I used white primer on the clapboard and gray primer on the roof. I painted the windows gloss black:

I brush painted the porch and roof with craft acrylic paints. I have a bunch of Delta Ceramcoats. I used a variety of grays. I tried to vary the shingles. It worked better on this other house:

I use these primers for all sorts of things:
[IMG] [IMG] [IMG] That flat red primer is a good boxcar red color. The dark gray is almost black, so I use it on trucks and underframes.

One of my other hobbies is model rocketry, and just about everybody rattlecans the small/medium size stuff:
