I saw on another site that plain old "Krylon Matte Finish" rattle can paint is actually really good. And you get a life time supply for 4-5 bucks. Trick is to spray it thu a 5" straw into a empty jar that works with your airbrush. It will fill up a 1/2 or 1 oz jar pretty quick. Don't know about you folks, but over the decades I have spent 100's of dollars on flat clear paint in those little bottles. This is so far, the best I have ever used. It goes on a bit thick right from the can on a model I think. So spraying into an airbrush application is best IMHO. Let us know what you think.
Rats! Both my Paasche airbrushes went in our estate sale. I still am doing a bit of modeling - may need to get another airbrush. Tom - thanks for the tip on Krylon Matt. K
A couple other buddies of mine have been happy with that. They also decant it and airbrush it. I dont have the intestinal fortitude to decant spray paint. Seems like bomb squad work to me!
It works pretty slick, just hold the straw right on the nozzle discharge and press down keep the other end of the straw in the jar, just stop before it gets full. LOL.
My buddies actually drill the can, which scares me. The spray in the straw sounds good. Like you said, if it works it would save a whole bunch of money for other projects.
Holy smokes man, if they are drilling the can, they are playing with a bomb. Using the straw method is safe and you regulate the flow and amount.
I've used the Krylon clear flat and you're right, it works like a champ. Much cheaper than Dullcote and every bit as good. If you're building a structure, just use the rattle can. GS
Yep the best of both worlds, rattle can the buildings and airbrush the trains. All using the same can for the source for paint.
Here are a couple pics of the result I am talking about as far as the paint is concerned. First we have a rather shimmering truck. After a coat of Krylon Matt clear coat, and not a real heavy one, also amazing how fast it dries. No paint touch ups either.
One of the local guys says be careful and don't use that over enamel paint. It could lift the paint or craze it. It would be okay over acrylics.
Never any issues for me Keith. I have painted over all kinds of paints. Even heavy coats seem OK. But I guess a disclaimer never hurts.
He did say the carrier solvent may be a little strong coming right out of the can. He did not take into account that you said to "vent" the product from the can into a jar; that would cause some of the solvent to evaporate, reducing its strength.
I have been using vms matte varnish and getting good results, it covers the decals really well and gives a really flat finish. The only problem I’ve found is that you have to order it online comes from overseas. It’s a water based acrylic so no odor and easy to clean.
