    Day 21,

    Happy New Year.

Cynthia is awake and responding, they haven't decided yet to remove the ventilator because of the holiday. Will know more when I go back to the hospital this afternoon. I spent last night with Cynthia being New Years Eve and came home to check on the dogs and pay a couple of bills.

In the movie Parenthood with Steve Martin, I love the part where grandma said life is like a rollercoaster, you go up and down and up. Grandma is a genius!!!

They are going to remove the ventilator tomorrow and put on a bi-pap mask to give Cynthia a chance to breathe on her own. We will monitor the blood gas and if it goes great they won't have to do a tracheotomy. That's what I'm hoping for.
    Make that I'm praying for.

    Day 22,

The doctor had to do a tracheotomy on Cynthia this afternoon. They said it would be the best for her to let her heal faster. She was awake and responding to everyone this morning and is asleep right now. Today was a great day because Cynthia doesn't have the tube in her mouth. She will be able to whisper by morning and it will sound great!!!

  6. The trache seems scary but if it helps it’s worth it. Good luck as always!

Sometime you have to go through some unpleasantness to get to the better parts! Thoughts are with you both buddy!

    Day 23,

Cynthia is in and out of sleep, she sure looks great without the ventilator tube in her mouth. The ventilator is connected to the tracheotomy incision and the oxygen is set at 40%. She hasn't been able to whisper yet but it's just a matter of time.

    Day 24,

Cynthia is doing well with the tracheotomy, her oxygen is set to 30%. She looks great without the ventilator tube in her mouth and she is able to whisper softly. Also wants to go home but that will take time.

    Day 25,

Cynthia is doing great, her oxygen is set at 30%. She is wanting to go home real bad and it's hard to tell her that she can't at this time. When she gets out of ICU she will be transferred to a regular room to learn how to eat again. Hopefully this will happen in the next couple of days.

    Day 26,

Cynthia had the ventilator removed from the tracheotomy incision and has an oxygen mask over the incision with the flow of 50%. She is really mad because we won't let her go home, still too early for that.

Sounds good Joe! When our ladies start getting pissed, it signals they are getting their energy back towards recovery. Good news!

    Day 27,

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers!!!

Cynthia had to have the ventilator reinstalled to the tracheotomy, they said that would try again tomorrow to wean her off the ventilator. Her oxygen is set at 40% and is alert and responding now tough she did sleep a lot today. They no longer give her pain meds which is good because the Fentanyl is one nasty stuff, I was getting concerned about withdrawals but so far there have been no signs.

    Day 28,

Cynthia is awake and responding right now and still has the ventilator on the tracheotomy incision with the oxygen set at 30%. The plan is to remove the ventilator tomorrow morning and try the oxygen mask again.

    Day 29,

Cynthia is in and out of sleep pretty much all day. The ventilator is connected to the tracheotomy incision and the oxygen is set at 40%. They are going to try to get her to sit in a chair for a few minutes tomorrow. I know she will enjoy it greatly, she had a big smile when she heard that.

    Day 30,

Cynthia is doing fantastic and they just moved her to a room in the pulmonary wing of the hospital. That's a giant step towards going home, can't describe the joy we are feeling right now. She has a tracheotomy collar on the she is breathing on her own for the most part. The collar is just assisting a little bit.
