    Looks fine. Weathering and sunlight makes it hard to get exact orange shades. Who’s to say it’s not perfect.

    On the road tomorrow, so a Tuesday post for Workshop Wednesday. While stuck at the hotel this week, I tried bringing along some essentials and worked on assembly of a Tichy flatcar model.


    This is part of my continuing resolution to build the kits that I have before buying more, resulting in my own personal hobby shop sized stash. A few more have gone together since last posting.


    These include a much-needed stock car, the last 2-bay hopper that needed renumbering, and a Tichy flatcar with wood sides. Also tested some decals on a 36ft single sheath boxcar. These will need to go for paint soon. Maybe over the long weekend. A few decals came in for the Tichy flatcars, but no Frisco among them. Thinking a MoPac and some Texas roads.

    I read that Rod Stewart builds kits for his model railroad while on the road and staying in hotels.

    Thanks Jim. I need to have you guys stay on me to get it finished. I have read the same about Rod Stewart. I have built quite a few travelling, my dad has also.

    Bob, the line about the home hobby shop is funny. That's all of us isn't it? HAHAHHA Your stuff looks great as always!

    Ye gods, man, are you mad? Don't let my wife know of this resolution...
    I think the Tichy flatcar is a NC&StL prototype. I bought two kits in a plastic bag from a flea market, and they have NC&StL decals. Of course, I haven't built them yet (see above). See http://magazine.trainlife.com/rmj_1993_6/ for more info on these cars.

    Thanks guys. WPAFB Billeting is not quite the rock and roll lifestyle!

    Gary, there is also a decal set with a number of road names for the flat cars

    Not sure if all are prototypical. There is a MoPac one, C&EI, M-K-T, and T&P that I am considering. Looking to see if oxide or black would be the right base color for each.

    Got a little bit done of the SL-SF 3900 besides staring at it. Got all the grab irons added, coupler cut bars bent up and added, as well as the brake pipe that runs down the sill of the car. I am debating whether or not to machine some plastic off the bottom so some weight can be added. Still working on mods to the car, before you buy it, might save everyone some time and distress. The warpage continues to trouble me, I clamped the car to a steel straight bar and immersed it in a pot of 130 degree water for a few minutes, it is supposed to stay straight after cooling, we will see. I am going to load the car and let it sit for a few days and see what happens.

    Looks good Tom. Overall it is nice looking. Once you add the Holley touch to it the details will make it great. Some A-line stirrups might be in order but other than that its nice.
    I have had to straighten alot of resin and styrene models but never any 3D printed models. I am not sure what the memory is like in the material you have? I'm sure you will let us know. When he made the design for this did he factor in some crown to the deck? Or is it more curve than that? I would have tried the same hot water technique as you.

    An hour after I took the images above the car went back to the waaay overloaded look, I mean sags like 16 scale inches. Yesterday, it was 130F water today 140F let the water temp stabilize for a while immerse my concoction in the water let sit for 5 minutes then turn off the fire, and let it cool to room temp before removing from the water.
    What a pain.

    Come on guys - UP is a great railroad. So was/is ATSF. So was CB&Q, GN, NP. But BN ............... nah!
    I'm finally reading Chard Walker's book "Cajon" now, and marvel on how the ATSF managed to sneak in between the San Gabriel Mountains and the San Bernardino Mountains to get into LA from the east. Quite an engineering feat. They gave the UP trackage rights to share the costs. But no go for their SP rival - SP had to build a separate route through Cajon along side the ATSF/UP route!
    Good pic on page 176 showing a run-through using Frisco's ABBA F9A/F9B set with SLSF 5007 on the point as they power train CTX into Summit, Feb 21, 1962. I'm sure the dynamic brakes got a good workout every time the SLSF units made that run!
