The next project on my layout is a bandstand with an A frame cover that will be in the city park. Tonight I did the base and steps. I'm still designing the A frame. A photo and some references for the A frame are attached. What kind of roof do you think would be on a structure like this? Wood shingles or corrugated metal are options, but I'd like to do something different than that, if possible. What do you think would be a plausible material for the roof during the 1940's /1950's? Thanks in advance, Paul Moore
Some bandstand are simple structures, mostly round. The one in Cape was somewhat unremarkable. But you could also look at gazebo structures. I think a round or octagon shaped structure would be more appealing and is still relatively easy to build for someone of your proven capability.
Hi Keith, You are correct--most bandstands were gazebos. The reason I went a different direction is that the Gazebo took up more room than I really wanted to use (my allotted space is more rectangular) , and I wanted something different. Plus, it's already started. Just for kicks, here are some photos of a dance hall on the side of a mountain I started scratch building 15 or more years ago. It was for a different layout that I no longer own. There's no space for the dance hall on this layout. Attached is a photo of the prototype. Paul
Sometimes mistakes can end up being for the best. The frame is done on the rectangular bandstand. Today I made a potential wood roof. I made it out of a piece of scribed siding. The edges were painted to simulate wood supports, the underneath is the scribed portion and was stained a nice wood color, and the top was painted to look like a aged metal roof with some patina. It didn't work, so I sanded it with 600 grit and repainted it. While it dried I went for a bicycle ride. The thing curled like I couldn't believe!!!! I've seen wood curl if only painted on one side, but never like this when spray painted with solvent based paint and painted on both sides. The more I look at it, I like it. It may be the roof. Paul
Oh heck yeah. Keep the curl! You may want to put the stairs on the back though. The brace would be a real head banger.
How dumb can I be!!! I didn't even think about The side braces were an after thought, and you are correct--I need to redesign the access! Thanks, Paul
Maybe it's ok...the brace is 7' above the top step, and people were shorter then. I might modify the brace.
