This car Started as a Athearn blue box 40' flat car this car is Boxcar Red, and is highly customized. A lot more work into this than I will ever get back. I painted and made the decals. Modifications include the removal of a great deal of the overkill fish-belly under-frame to more reflect the Red caboose cars. Removed all the cast on grabs, hand brake stuff, replaced with proper appliances, Tichy stem winder brake was installed. Probably the most time consuming part of this was to remove the cast on wooden deck, that belt sander really worked hard to do that, I was just careful not hold it on the sander to long. Used Details West coupler cut bars as well as accurail trucks & Reboxx wheels. Here are a few pics for you.

  2. Nice job Tom, All the work paid off for a sharp car, you are right though probably under appreciated as it rolls by in a train though. Good stuff!

    Thank you Steve.
Yea here it is just another stinkin car in a train. These 40 ft cars are great as we can usually make 65 car trains with these. They are good performers, and look good on curves too.

Thank you William. I bet you saw a lot of that kind of car loading. We just had a 3oK damaged tank car we had to load onto a long flat, with the trucks on one end, never saw so many binders on a load tied to a car, wow, all brand new too. Kinda surprised they didnt just cut it up where it laid.

How about that fishing trip? Which area did you fish? I looked all that up, looks like a nice place. I got your loads all made and packed up, USPS shipping paid, like that click"n"ship, will mail out tomorrow morning.
    Thanks guys.

NICE Job! May I ask what you used for the "new" decking?

I will be anxious to see those loads. With my backdrop coming this week, I will be ready to gear up on the scenery. Bennett Springs is a great place to fly fish. Through the week, almost anywhere on the river is not crowded. Feels great this time of the year, the leaves will be changing soon and the mid-west is some of the best color anywhere.

I think the final products were well worth the work. Splendid modeling, Tom. I have one of those AMB decks on a CRI&P flat car that doesn't have nearly the detail added; the deck alone does wonders for the appearance. The lettering isn't very crisp, which makes me wonder if it's time to use your work as an inspiration.
