Tonight I finished another AMB wood caboose kit. I backdated it a bit and added Tomar marker lamps. These kits are a blast to build!

Looks nice Jim. Do your lights operate off a decoder, track power, or battery? ~mike c

Thanks. They use track power but some day I plan to use a decoder so that I can add a small interior light. That way I can turn the lights on or off at will. So many projects, so little time.

Another fantastic build, Jim. Every bit as nice (or even nicer) as the one that you sold to me. Absolutely one of my favorites.

Now, to modify one with a side door!

I hope it's still serving you well. These are fun kits to build. I need to find out what else would be used on branch line service in the 1915-1925 era.

Thats a fine looking caboose Jim. Was the light kit commercial? Can you give us the part number for the marker lights? Are they bulbs or LED's?
Think I may want one to light a caboose.

Thanks gentleman. The markers are Tomar Industries and the kit came with the bridge rectifier and everything needed. I can't find the part number but search it on eBay and there's some for $24.99 right now. They also have 1.5 volt incandescent versions.

I just realized I forgot to add the cupola braces. I need to do that tomorrow.

Jim, if you have access to a copy of "Frisco Power," there's a photo of a side-door St. Louis, Memphis & Southeastern somewhere in Swampeast Missouri toward the beginning of the era you mentioned. I think it would look right at home for your era and locale.

    Nice work!

    Best Regards,

Thanks, Chris. I wish someone could post that image from the book. Sounds like a good scratch building or kit bashing project. Right now I'm in the middle of another steam dredger project. All the heat and humidity has driven me into the basement.

I I always wanted to build this one in 0 Scale .. Just never seemed to find the time.
then I decided that 7.5 inch would be better .. Still never found the time.

    Hi Sherrel,

That is just a crazy looking outfit. Wow, quite a job just to get on and off that thing, no end platforms. Looks like, it was built from a boxcar.

That's what I thought but it has a builders sign posed in front of it. I guess it could be a rebuild. I've got styrene car siding, arch bar trucks, brass wire so I might get this started sooner than later. I even have marker lamps but they're incandescent so I need a couple of resistors. This will surely be a one of a kind model.

Jim, et al. Might I recommend a Soundtraxx Soundcar decoder for controlling those lights and add yet another dimension; sound. I put one in an Overland Models brass Frisco caboose for Bob Hoover. It was really cool.

That's a great idea. I think I'll do that. I started the car body sections tonight. I need to buy one of those tools from Micro Mark to cut square window and door openings. I'm not very good at that.

    Jim:

Bob Hoover (aka FriscoFriend) here. Keith did install a Soundcar decoder in my brass caboose and it is awesome. You will be able to turn the marker lamps on a off in additional to full sound including an air whistle. I recommended the only thing you don't turn on is the flat wheel sound. It will drive everyone crazy! Also, if you decide to install one I highly recommend adding the plug-in keep alive that you can buy for it so you don't have to worry about dirty track, dead frogs, etc. It is so powerful that you can pick the caboose up and the sound will keep going for another 10-15 seconds.

Thanks. I will follow your advice. This caboose will more than likely be my favorite. Unless I screw it up.

Another AMB wood caboose coming together. This is a pre-assembly...still needs couplers, handrails, cupola roof and ladders. Will try to get a gloss coat on tonight in preparation for decals and start forming handrails.

    I need some advice:

-- About where would marker lights be positioned? Need to measure out (Jim?)
-- What is the size of the Frisco herald?
-- What is the size of the SL-SF and Number?
-- Handrails and grab irons...black, red, yellow? Would like a ~1950-1955 look.

    Thanks all,

    -Bob T.
