FYI. Drove by Lindenwood Yard yesterday afternoon on I-44 on our way down to The Hill to get some calories. Lots of crude oil tank cars were in the yard. Not in long unit trains, but in blocks of three to six on various tracks. New looking cars. Several foreign road locomotives were sitting around also - CSX, NS and some red ones I didn't recognize, along with much BNSF power.

Interesting, but the place looked better when b/y F units populated it!

    Let's see, DeGregorio's, Viviano's, Volpi's, Oldani's, etc,etc. Yep calorie city.
Yeah, I remember those days when the b/y F units were everywhere to be seen in the yard. Thanks for bringing back a short vision of memory.

Been a bunch of covered hopper trains, coal trains, [ empty and full ]. I drive past it twice a day now to my new job, so it has been interesting to see heavy traffic at Lindenwood. CN , KCS, NS, UP locos! Crazy stuff.

Also CitiRail, faded CP, Leheigh Valley heritage scheme and occassional FerroMex locomotives...

Do not forget the occasional ex-AT&SF "Warbonnet," or "faux-bonnet." :) There was one (724) standing at the west end of Lindenwood last Wednesday (5/21/14). A few more have been on the tracks since then, including one (780) helping to push an eastbound grain train Saturday 5/24. I found out it led a westbound on the Cuba Sub the next afternoon.

Rolled by Lindenwood Yard yesterday after having a nice lunch at Piccadilly. Lots of "pumpkins" in the yard, but also some NS power (all black, no heritage units). There was a train that came up from the River Division sitting west of the yard waiting to come in. A bit west along I-44, another long freight was sitting on the Eastern Division also waiting - lots of covered hoppers and brand new crude oil cars on this one. Sounds like a busy afternoon at Lindenwood.

Have seen several trains going in/coming out of the old Chrysler lead. I was not aware of another RR shipper up there. Maybe they are using for storage? Also saw a Sky Blue unit with BNSF on the side. Shades of Great Northern Big Sky Blue?

Got stopped on the way to lunch at the Geyer/Big Bend crossing a bit ago for a westbound behind three or four pumpkins. The train had lots of steel coil cars on it, unusual - I don't recall ever seeing a lot of them on the SLSF. Also a long string of faded BN "grangreen" three-bay covered hoppers, a long string of two-bay covered hoppers, and a bunch of new looking 50+ft flat cars with several bulkheads about 6-ft apart down the length of the car deck. No loads. Any idea what those were for? - I've not seen them before. The train had about ten-fifteen of them in it. He was moving along at a good pace.

    Ken,

Could they possibly have been tie cars?

Brad - Could well be, good suggestion. Wish I had a camera to take a pic as they whizzed by! They were shiny new cars, mineral brown color. I'm thinking BNSF markings, but I really don't recall. Poor observation on my part!

Ken and Brad, BNSF, uses a similar car as you describe for the P-811, concrete lay down machine. 15 cars would be about right for a days work. They could be laying concrete, ties where the cars would come into St. Louis. You might be able to pull up something on the web, to look at the cars.

Sounds like cars for welded rail.

Coil steel loads (covered and uncovered) are currently a daily sight through Kirkwood. Most make up the first loads of westbound trains. Some trains are nothing but coil steel cars and some of these trains have a pusher (or 2). Once in awhile, I notice a cut of coil steel on uncovered cars on an eastbound.

I wonder what is going on with all the steel coil loads. Does anyone know where they are going, or where they have come from?

I had an undec coil steel car (Walthers I think) and the set of Oddballs decals for it in SLSF markings ..... and I sold them a few years ago. Another example of good timing!

Except the bulkheads on the deck of the car were solid.

Chances are the steel coils are coming from Blytheville Arkansas (River Sub) steel mills. I have noticed about 20 flatcars loaded with Concrete ties. I suspect that they are being installed in the area. A Herzog crew has been in the Blytheville area for a few weeks.

I drove past Lindenwood this morning and looks like the boys were not having a very good Monday. There was a string of loaded container cars with remote power sitting just west of the junction. Meanwhile the rear of the cut was about even with the tower with a pair of empty cars accordioned off the rail pointing south, along with lots of folks looking things over. Was driving so I couldn't take a picture, but not something you see everyday.

The Lindenwood derailment around 11 AM on December 18, 2017 was mentioned briefly on Facebook St. Louis Railfans and Modelers page as well. It was quiet on the rails in Kirkwood until the westbound local ("Rolla Rocket") went by well after dark. Normally, this train passes through Kirkwood around 3 PM give or take. The derailment must have been difficult to clear.
