You are talking about the portal page I think. It shows the latest updates to a thread. To see everything you should look at the activity stream. However, nothing has disappeared. You are just looking at a feed of recent content. The activity stream will show you everything.

New posts only shows posts since you were last here. That's why.

 

Ok guys I see what you mean now. Since I understand what you are speaking of now, let me explain these pages and how they work and are supposed to work.

Today's Posts: The link is http://www.frisco.org/vb/search.php?do=getdaily&contenttype=vBForum_Post and it is a static page designed to show posts from the last 24 hours, regardless of whether or not you have read them. Posts which have been read should be standard text and posts which are unread should be bolded text.

New Posts: The link is http://www.frisco.org/vb/search.php?do=getnew&contenttype=vBForum_Post and it is a static page shich is designed to show posts made only since you were last here. If you visit the site and check the new posts and return 12 hours later, that page is designed to show you only the threads that have been posted to since you were here (12 hours ago).

Activity Stream: The link is http://www.frisco.org/vb/activity.php and it is a dynamic page designed to keep users informed of all activity on the site. If you watch this page you will miss nothing.

The activity stream is a recent addition to vBulletin within the last year and really changed the way that we look at content. The great thing about the activity stream is that you can sit on the page and it will auto-update using what is called Ajax (meaning that content on the page can change without reloading the page). If you are a new content watcher (as I am) then the activity stream should be your bread and butter. Today's Posts and New Posts are kind of holdovers from the former way that the software functioned but they have not been removed.

If for some reason you are not using the activity stream, then I suggest Today's Posts over New Posts if you want to see more activity. New Posts is designed to show only threads which have been updated since you visited. Since the incpetion of the activity stream, I use neither of the old pages. However, both do function as designed.

Check out the big blue button that says "What's New." That will take you right to the Activity Stream. (I still want those buttons to be different colors.)

Also take a look at the link labeled New Posts in the second line of the menu bar. This is closer to what you are looking for.

There isn't a function built into the forum software that delivers exactly what we used to see on the Portal page that provides a list of threads that you have not read today and that removes the thread from the list once you have viewed it.

I spent some time trying to re-create the code to provide that function, but without real training in the software that makes the forum function, I was shooting with a shotgun and trying to hit ants. Someone with more up-to-date training in computer languages could get it done - I just ran out of patience and time.

 

One other suggestion. I don't know how you go about getting to the web site, but I have a favorite created on my Favorites Bar in Internet Explorer that links to www.frisco.org (with no suffixes, etc).

Such a favorite can be created by clicking on, and dragging to the Favorites Bar, the icon that shows up next to the http in the URL bar. Once the icon is on your Favorites Bar, right click on it and and select Properties. Then click on the General tab and rename it in the white box at the top to Frisco.org. Then click on the Web Document tab and put http://www.frisco.org/ in that box and then click OK at the bottom.

On the portal page that will open, mid-page, is the list; Latest Frisco Discussions.

This list keeps the most active discussions available in order of newest posts at the top and oldest posted threads at the bottom.

Since I typically visit at least once daily, the newest stuff is always at the top and I can see how long ago in time, the newest post was created. This works for me even if I haven't been able to get to the forum for 24 to 48 hours due to other interfering activities. (That really gets to me - keeping me away from anything Frisco).

 

Note also that I have it set so that if you go to www.frisco.org it goes to the portal page because I believe that is what people here want. However, if you go to www.trainboard.com it goes right to the activity stream. It could be set here that way too but I don't know if that is what people want. I go right to the activity stream by choice myself.

Well, it's interesting to see how people look at things differently. I love it because I read pretty much everything and it let's me see everything in virtually real time without reloading the page. I had pressed vBulletin to develop something like that in the past and they did. For me, it was probably the best thing I ever saw added to the software, with the possible exception of photo uploading.
