Dear Rogerrt477: Thanks for this great post. My mother was born in Canalou, Missouri and lived there until she was eight years old. Would you happen to know what branchline/subdivision/division of the Frisco this was on???
Dear Karl: Many Thanks! I've been lookingo for this information for some time. As I wrote above, my mother and all her five siblings were born at home, in Canalou, where there was no doctor and you had to take the train to reach the nearest pharmacy. My older aunts & uncles knew the stationmaster and his family, and also the man who threw the mail sacks off the RPO as the train passed. My family moved away from there, looking for a better futurem circa 1952, after all the old-growth forests had been clear cut for lumber, and the land converted to farming. I have a picture of some of my family standing outside the Frisco depot while waiting for a train that would carry away a famkily member whom we would not see again for fifty years. Everyone is smiling but it was a dark time for the family because World War 2 changed everything and was no longer possible to live an isolater rural lifestyle as they always had. The youngster, including eventually my mother, simply didn't feel the same about life as their parents had. They had different expectations. And by this time, circa 1948, the railroad in Canalou was already ailing. These days, Canalou is mostly just a wide-spot on a highway; it barely exists.
Attached is the page that covers the Leachville Sub taken from 39A, Employee Timetable June 15, 1956. Service was provided by a Tri-Weekly freight that carried passengers in the caboose.
If you get a chance to scan and upload the photo of your family at the Canalou depot, I'm sure that many folks here would appreciate it. Seems that we lack too few photos of smaller Frisco locations. Best Regards,
