Re: April 1937 Public Timetable - St Louis, Joplin and Wichita Any idea when train No 3-303 from St. Louis through Monett, Joplin and Wichita became named "The Will Rogers"? Was it while he was still alive?
The Will Rogers name was applied to trains No 3-4 after they were upgraded, effective October 18, 1936. This was about 14 months after Will Rogers had been killed in a plane crash in Alaska. Westbound train No 3 left St. Louis at 11:59 pm and arrived Oklahoma City 12:59 pm, while eastbound No 4 left OKC 11:30 am and arrived St. Louis 12:15 am. No 4 carried an Oklahoma City-Chicago Pullman, via the Alton Railroad north of St. Louis. The train also initially carried a St. Louis-Oklahoma City Pullman and a non-air conditioned St. Louis-Springfield setout Pullman in each direction, as well as "deluxe lounge" and dining car service. Re: April 1937 Public Timetable - Beaumont and Enid I worked from Enid to Beaumont in the early 1960s. We was put up in a great little hotel owned by a rich rancher that did a lot of shipping on the SLSF. He built a very nice small hotel for the train crews to lay over in when we tied up in that station.
