Anyone know how far the Joplin Union Sation (KCS etc.) is/was from the Frisco building/depot?

    Thanks, Tom

Just an estimation but I would say around a mile. Joplin Union Station is north of the Frisco Building on Main street in Joplin. Both Buildings are on the East side of main. Joplin Union station is just North of 1st and Main and the Frisco Building is just south of 10th and Main. You can get a real nice view of them on Microsoft Live Earth.

Thanks Bob--I was just wondering how people made train connections back in the day.

    You are welcome.
I remember the Joplin Union Station very well. I rode the KCS from New Orleans to Joplin a couple of times when I was a kid. I lived in Long Beach Mississippi in the 60's. We would get on the L&N and go to New Orleans then transfer to the KCS. We would get off either in Joplin or Pittsburg depending on what relatives were available to pick us up. I sure wish we had local passenger service today, what a treat it was to ride those trains. One of the trips home I was allowed to explore the train by myself. There just happened to be a business car on the end of the train that trip. I walked right on in to it not knowing any better. The Porter or attendent of that car caught me and wanted to know what I was doing. When he saw the awe in my eyes he invited me to set on the back porch and watch the scenery. I must have been there a little too long as another member of the crew came looking for me and I got in a little trouble with my Mom but it was worth it. I probably didn't get that special treat of a Hersey bar on that trip. Oh what memories! Some day I am going to model the L&N hummingbird and the KCS Southern Belle and Flying Crow just to help preserve my childhood memories.

Me and a couple of the Joplin area rail nerds (as my daughter calls us) spent a beautiful Saturday afternoon tracing Frisco tracks all over Joplin. The web of trackage was truly amazing at one time. Especially for a city as small as Joplin. There is still some operating trackage and many traces of abandoned lines as well. Mopac, Katy and KCS also had trackage in Joplin, but not nearly as much as the Frisco.

Using Sanborn maps we found the location of the Frisco roundhouse. Oddly it is not shown on the schematic I uploaded. According the to Sanborn maps the roundhouse was at location #231 on the schematic map I posted. A few concrete footings, railroad ties and chat ballast remain and we found a circular dump pile grown up with trees that was in the roundhouse location shown on the Sanborn maps.

Also a few concrete culverts over a small concrete drainage ditch gave away the location of some of the lines. The culverts were dated 1948 and 1949. This really seemed to be a late date for the Frisco to be making so many changes in a roundhouse area. We wondered if the changes were made as dieselization took place and the roundhouse and coaling trestle was abandoned. Any other theories out there?

Hope to see a few of you in Springfield this weekend at the train show or down by the tracks.

    Best wishes,

    Dale,

I have several original Joplin Frisco plat maps that show the roundhouse, downtown, station, etc. They are out at Carona. I also have several other communities in southwest Missouri and southeast Kansas. They came out of the Joplin Frisco freight station. I bought them at a Joplin train show many years ago. One is close to ten feet long and three feet wide. Another friend of mine who lives close to Joplin has several others that he bought at the same meet. Between the two of us, I think we can answer most all of your questions about the Frisco in the Joplin area. Let me know if you would like to look at them and we can get together.

The Santa Fe had a line into Joplin from Chanute and the M & NA/M & A operated into Joplin on KCS trackage .

The Santa Fe came into Joplin from Pittsburg over the KCS using trackage rights. They were a partner with the KCS, MKT and MNA in the Joplin Union Depot Company, better known as JUD. They shared the JUD yard, roundhouse and passenger station, they did have their own freight station. I have not been able to track down the exact date they stopped coming into Joplin, but I believe it was in the late 60's or early 70's.

    John,

Thanks for the offer. Maybe we can get together and do that some time. Jim Taylor was with us and he has one of those ten foot long maps too. It was way to windy to bring that out and look at it. The Sanborn maps were really helpful.

Unfortunately we are about to enter the tick, chigger and poison ivy season. I am not to eager to tromp around in that stuff to find old railroad relics. I try to do my abandoned rail explorations in the late fall, early spring or winter. And it is easier to find old right of ways when the foliage is not hiding everything.

Hey - thanks for the map! I'm modeling Carthage, Missouri in n scale between 1950-1960. Do you know where I can find a map like this for Carthage in the '50s?

    Thanks again!

Pete, not sure what the map is that you speak of, but wondering if you have other info. I have Northern Division timetable 39 for 9/30/56 with the Carthage Sub trains and other info.

Do you know if any Frisco passenger trains passed through the Ruth yard, or was it freight only ?

Thanks so much !! I worked at a machine shop that adjoined the Ruth yard in the late 70s, I saw a lot of Frisco freight action out our back door, but of course by then passenger service was long gone. I knew that back in 1940s and 50s the circus trains used a siding at Ruth yard when they came to Joplin.

According to the May 1953 Official Railway Guide, the two stations were about half a mile apart.

The Frisco passenger station was located at 6th and main, the Frisco freight station was located at 10th and main. The Passenger station was recently restored and serves as a senior citizen apartment. The freight station has been gone for years.
