Attached are the installation instructions that I created as I installed DCC in my first run Proto 2000 Frisco E8A, Big Red. This engine was not originally configured to be DCC ready, and required a little bit of circuit tracing to determine how to make everything work.

    I hope this helps.

I purchased a DCC sound equiped E8 from Walthers and put 2016 on it. It took some shell modification on the underside of the top for it to fit but other than that it went on fairly easy so if anyone should run across a DCC sound equped chassis 2020 and 2016 will fit with some work

HWB - I'm curious ..... where were the shell interference points? What did you do to fix it?

How good does it sound? Does the sound system give you the impression of two 567 diesel engines per locomotive?

I'm not into sound yet, but I'm getting tempted for a few favorite locomotives. Obviously, my SLSF E8's are on that list!

I'll never forget how great the pair of Racehorse E-units on #9 sounded when they started up again after its station stop at Rolla. I can still hear it in my mind.

    Howdy,

Nicely done. I have seen several E8's on eBay that are the old style, but would be good for doing up in the Frisco race horses. I'll use your guide when I get one.

    Best,

No kidding. Ed and I took his older Racehorse, and tried to swap shells with a later sound equipped UP E unit, and it did not work out well at all. We removed doors and all kinds of stuff. At the point that it appeared that we were going to have to disassemble the chassis and do some milling, we gave up.:(

One picture that I did not include in my write-up shows exactly how much room is in the back end of the shell for a speaker. I have attached that picture so you can get an idea. I'm certain that there is room for the appropriate Tsunami decoder and speaker!

I made a simple baffle box and mounted it with the speaker to the roof of the shell over the gear tower, it worked great. ~mike

here are some pics of the trimming i had to perform. I had to remove the hinges fron the shell and then glued clear buytl plastic to the shell. I used clear so it would not be visible bhind the gap between shell and door, Then I glued the doors to the clear plastic. Next I trimmed the plastic around the vent flush with the shell. The shell then fit like a glove on the sound chassis.
As far as the quality of sound? It's ok. Your'e not going to close your eyes and get the feeling your'e standing next to the real deal but it is a 567 prime mover and the horn is the deep single tone from those days.

Hello Folks, I made a mistake in the wiring instructions for the Proto 2000 E8/9 Decoder install. If you downloaded or printed a copy from the original post, please download the revised pdf instructions I have uploaded on the post at the beginning of this thread on 4/21/2009. I apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused.

FYI, I'm working on an article with pics for the next issue of The Meteor on adding SLSF details to the Frisco Proto 2000 Racehorse E8's.

Try Walthers...they took over Life Like some time back.

A couple of years ago I bought two e8 trucks for $20.00 each.

I used gears from an Athearn drive to fix a first run GP7

Today I received the new Soundtraxx Tsunami TSU-1000 #827118 Dual EMD 567 Decoder. I rushed home after work and to my workbench, grabbed my Frisco E8 #2020 Big Red and removed the old TSU-1000 #827101 EMD 567 decoder. I installed the new Dual 567 decoder. WOO HOO! It sounds FANTASTIC! KUDOS to the crew at Soundtraxx! My other E8 will get the same treatment. I can and will use the removed 567 decoder in a GP7 or F unit.

Anyone that has been waiting to put sound in their E units now has even more reason to make the move.

Keith, would the elimination of the cicuit board and replacing it with a decoder (NCE D13SRJ), which has a mars light function work here?

Yes, it would, I used the same decoder as you indicate. Using the light board in the loco eliminated the need to change the bulbs. If you eliminate the light board, you must either change to 12v bulbs or determine resistor values to provide voltage drop for the existing bulbs.

Ultimately, the D13SR was replaced with a Tsumami #827101 and then the newly released Tsunami #827118 Dual EMD 567 and the bulbs were replaced with LEDs. I now have a white headlight and dual red/white MARS light.

The new Dual 567 Tsunami was worth the change. I custom-designed a speaker enclosure using a high bass speaker that goes in the rear where the light board was. Terry Jankowski (tmfrisco) and others can vouch for the sound quality.
