I need a picture of this series of hoppers that shows the end detail of the car, specifically the roof line. I know there is a picture of one of them on page 98 of the Molo book but it doesn't show the detail I am looking for. Any help as always is greatly appreciated.

    Chris:
No No No this is exactly the type of photo I was looking for. It is the open area between the roof sections that I was looking for. I was wondering if the section was open as shown in your photo or filled in. Thanks a million you answered my question totally. I am trying to build a scratch built model for my MMR from not only an article in a Kalmbach book but from a photo in the Molo book. Chris, you are indeed a great asset to this group and I thank you very much.

Good pic and discussion! The Bowser model also shows the open gap between the roof end and the car end (so does the Kato). I've always thought there must be a partition between the hopper roof and the ends of the hopper itself to close this gap. I wonder if there are any drawings of this car which shows that?

Intermountain has announced production of this hopper in RTR form with a scheduled December delivery. There will be 6 road #'s with a retail price of $31.95. Here is the link.

Bob, you are too kind. I am just a train geek who likes to absorb as much as I can and if I can help others in the process, it's all the more fun! :)

I didn't realize these cars came in two schemes but I did find a photo of the same series in what appears to be an earlier scheme - 1966 according to the photo data.

    http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=118623

Perhaps someone can give a general time frame for the different schemes.

I'll look forward to seeing pictures of the work-in-progress and finished product!

    Best Regards,

Chris - Neat pic! I didn't know these cars ran in a red oxide/boxcar red color scheme. I thought they were all either black (original) or gray (repaints).

Now I know what to do with that undec Bowser kit I have!

    Thanks for posting them.

And to "Jayhawk Bob" - thanks for starting this thread. As an old chemical guy, I'm a sucker for covered hoppers and tank cars. Love 'em! Good luck on your MMR project - I look forward to your updates. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

And to Bob Hoover - Is that upcoming IRC Frisco covered hopper new tooling, or is it the Bowser car as a RTR? Either way is OK -the Bowser kit is very nice, but IRC will likely do a better paint & lettering job than Bowser did.

    Ken and All:

I would speculate that it is a brand new car with new tooling unless Tichy had a similar car. Intermountain I believe now owns the Tichy dies and is releasing some of the cars like the open hopper, etc., but they do say they are Tichy cars. They will be in OKC in December and will probably have a pilot model there. I will ask them and take a photo and post it if they do. Bottom line, these models are pricey, but with detail next to none! I wish they would do the panel side Tichy hopper in Frisco someday, although its not an era that I model. I asked them last year to do the RTR ACF 2 Bay Centerflow in Frisco that they did years ago in kit form, but as yet to no avail.

What is the type of truck under these cars? The picture I am uploading was not taken by me. If you can tell me the truck type I would really appreciate an answer.

    Bob -

The trucks are ASF A-3 "Ride Control" trucks, a Frisco favorite.

In HO Kato makes a good one, Athearn makes a "fair" one. Don't know who offers the A-3 in N-scale.

Neat pic, neat car - repainted from the original black with white lettering and logo.

    Ken

ps - go Jayhawks! Could we possibly see two in a row?

Thanks for the reply. I did spme searching and I see Kadee makes them also. Hopefully one of the two KC area hobby shops I plan to visit Friday will have a set or two of them. Kansas City here I come!
I won't comment on the second part of your post as I wouldn't want to jinx the Hawks.

True - I forgot about the Kadee ASF A-3. The Kato has a better looking side frame, but the Kadee is OK for sure. I really don't like the Kato wheels (too shiny vs the Kadee and not as real looking), but I use them both with wreckless abandon.

The Kato truck rolls better - it will almost roll uphill!

Regarding your second point - I agree, we'll root for Mizzou. OK? ;)

Here is a picture of the nearly finished model. I have to replace a couple of angle brackets on the hopper gates and add latches to the top. I also have to add the air hoses and stirrips.

Please excuse my poor camera, it is just a cheapie. I am looking for a Digital Nikon hopefully I'll find one at a great price.
The model is totally scrachbuilt with the exception of the walkway, brake details and trucks. The walkway and trucks are Kadee and the brake detal parts are detail associates.
The car is made from .040 styrene, 0.20 styrene and .010 styrene. It also uses brass wire and Evergreen styrene strips, andgle and channel. I added rivit detail using and old compass point and a lot of patience. I hope you like it and that it inspires you to build a model.

Great to see that there are a few good craftsmen left in the hobby, in this world of "Ready to Run", take-it-out-of-the-box-and-put-it-on-the-layout model railroading.

    Great job !!

Bob, well done! Thanks for the basics-that helps me as I keep trying to get over false-starts on trying to scratchbuild a good caboose and that goofy looking #844 combine.

Kudos to you for having the patience and better eyesight than mine for making your rivets! Did you have to grind down the point at all?

I snagged a set of MicroMark pounce wheels about 10 years ago. They make decent looking rivets but I have to apply a decent bit of pressure without causing the wheel to slide. Still trying to perfect it.

Very nice work, El Bobo. Thanks for sharing,

    Chris:
I very lightly files the point so that it wouldn't be so sharp. I have tried pounce wheels but haven't found the correct one. One that looks good to me. I have also purchased a NWSL Riveter but it seems to be useless on strip styrene or at least I have not figured out how to use it for that yet.
I wish I would have shown you the cars yesterday. I had them at Ricks but I kind of kept the fact tht I was getting them judged to myself. I didn't want to distract from the Op session. I won Merit awards with them both and finished up my requirements for the Master buillder cars certificate. This also finished up all my requirements for my MMR. I am glad it is over and am looking forward to the next set of challenges. I am thinking of tackiling either the structures oor locomotive catagory next.

Bob, between your discretion and my single-task oriented mind, I hadn't the foggiest that the cars were being judged-congratulations on the merit awards and finishing the MMR requirements...well done!

Next time I hope to have more time to linger over your cars and Keith's benchwork samples.

    Best Reards,

    Chris:
I really was apprehensive about even having the cars judged at Rick's. I didn't want to take away from what I knew was going to be a great time. I was also so nervous that I gave myself an extreme headache. Rick got me some Advil that helped with that but it didn't totally go away until later that night. I really had a ball and hope that we can all get together again sometime.

Can anyone confirm what the text was here or the specs on these hoppers? I'm trying to replicate this as close as I can on a model. Thank you...
