Frisco Moguls
The Frisco evidently owned 86 steam locomotives with the 2-6-0 wheel arrangement over the years. Most were obtained or built for other roads before the turn of the century. They were used mostly for light-duty freight work and perhaps for switching in the later years. There were only two that could have been called modern, the two obtained in the JLC&E merger. Ed Heiss and Lee Buffington have graciously loaned the locomotive diagram books and rosters that was used to supply the prototype information below. The model measurements are the result of Nolan Null's allowing me to measure several in the stock at Pro Custom Hobby's Cattonsville store. It looks like very few classes are modelable using stock HO gauge models. Perhaps the other gauges have more. I would like to ask Bob Plough, Gale Hall or Bob Longo, and Joe Bothman to research N, S. and 0 gauge model availability, respectively.

| Comparison of Broadbelt photo # 4241 of JLC&E 32 (SL-SF 72) with the Vollrath July 1946 Memphis photo of sister #73 shown at left indicates the extensive rebuilding performed on these engines over the years. Valves were changed from slide to piston, valve gear was changed, lead truck changes, and different tender is noted . # 32's B/N may be read as 39038 on the excellect BLW negative & Broadbelt print. I started typing this feature about four months ago. Since I started, I have found out a few things about model Moguls in HO. First is that Pro Custom has none in their stock and second is that there are only about eight on the market. I think Par East has an austere brass Mogul in standard gauge, I know they have a narrow gauge version. I could find no info on, It. PFM has imported two In the past four years. One Is the B&M B-15c and the other is the SP M-4. The B&M engine, although an impressive looking model, is unlike anything Frisco had. The SP M-4 looks promising for the 363-366 class Frisco engines. Does anyone have access to one of these models?
Comparison of the photo in the PFM ad and the diagrams in Stagner's book gives hints that only the cylinders would have to be changed. The Frisco engines had slide valves. The other five models are all well known kits. The first one is the reissued Mantua 2-6-0 which is far too big. I think it is their 4-6-0 boiler on a 2-6-0 frame. Kemtron has offered, for many years, a model of a Wabash prototype, straight-boilered Mogul. They either have it ready for reissue at this time or soon will. The diagrams show that only the 304-316's were straight boilered. The little Roundhouse kit also has a straight boiler. Its drivers appear, from photos, to be quite large. I could not find one in a hobby shop to measure, but I did measure the 2-8-0 which shares a frame and boiler with the 2-6-0. Boyd is supposed to offer a kit of a GB&W prototype. I have also been unable to find one of them. A photo of GB&W #50 may be found on page 69 of the February 1978 issue of MODEL RAILROADER. I have been able to obtain prototype measurements of this locomotive thanks to the work of Mr. Gus Weinstock of Ladue, MO. It is unknown whether #50 is the prototype for the Boyd model.
The last model is one recently introduced by Arbour Models. It is based on a late-nineteenth century Brooks design, shares components with the soon-to-be-introduced 4-4-0, and looks quite close to several of the Frisco Moguls. It is the best bet of the bunch. I have prepared a table of the model measurements I could find. It is presented on page 26 due to lack of room on this page. Make your desired comparisons based on the diagrams and the table and give me your votes on model/prototype comparisons.
This is an example of the type research I would like the Group to do on each class of Frisco steam locomotive. I would like to try to do the 0-6-0's next. Only Ray Bullock has been giving me 0-6-0 modeling tips. We can not do this work by ourselves, Please help if you can. There have been a lot of 0-6-0 models offered in all the scales. The only ones we're sure of are the 3800 USRA's. Will those of you who have access to locomotive diagrams please check your copy for 0-6-0 #3602? The books loaned me by Lee and Ed have vague reference that this locomotive may have been rebuilt as a saddle tanker to work the cars shops at one time. I plan to tackle the 4-6-0's and 4-4-0's, in that order, after finishing up the 0-6-0's. I do not plan to be in a big hurry! In fact, the 4-4-0's could take years!
